You Mad? - A Recap of this Week’s Beefs, Twitter Beefs, Squabbles, Rants, Wars of Words and Other Assorted Drama in MMA

Welcome to a new year of MMA drama and silliness! My goodness, there was a lot going on this past week. I'd like to give a special welcome to Fedor Emelianenko who makes three separate appearances in this week's recap. I'm pretty sure that the only other fighter to appear thrice in a single week is Chael Sonnen so this is a very exclusive club. I feel like they should get t-shirts or something. Until then, they'll have to be content with just having a special place in my heart. Since we have so much to cover this week, let's just get to it!

Lyoto Machida vs. Chael Sonnen: These two have verbally sparred a little in the past. In fact, it even looked like they were going to fight each other in the Octagon at one point, but then Sonnen was booked in a fight with Brian Stann and we all moved along. Now, it seems that Machida would still like a piece of Chael. On Monday, he tweeted:

I believe this roughly translates to "I just got out of surgery but I'll fight you with one hand tied behind my back". Or, something. Naturally, Chael had a response:

Status: There wasn't much more to this and Chael even deleted the tweet. I think it was all just silly talk.

Mike Schiavello vs. Fedor Emelianenko: Fedor Emelianenko won his fight at the DREAM New Year's Eve event and then caused a big ruckus by being a diva about the bus he rode on. According the HDNet commentator Michael Schiavello on Twitter, this is what went down:

BTW Fedor is SUCH a DIVA! Other fighters & us sat on bus for about 90 min after show because Fedor apparently needs a bus all to himself! Even Bibi Fernandes and his team were booted off the second bus because "that is Fedor's bus", mind you these are like 70 seat tour buses!

seriously, it was just plain RUDE. Fighters want to get to their hotel we ALL HAD TO WAIT & Bibi had to clear off the Fedor bus. If greats like Hoost, JLB, Sefo, Schilt, Hunt, Hug, Aerts etc can all bus share, Fedor can too.

fancy booting Bibi Fernandes & his team off ONE BUS and onto the other more crowded one. Dude just won the B/W GP! #rude

Not to mention sitting there for 90 mins on a bus at 1230am waiting, waiting, waiting... I get the "special treatment" thing but hey, hire a small private van or a limousine, I'v seen that done before. Don't keep others waiting. sucked that I had to wait but more so guys who had fought their hearts out -- Bibi, Banuelos, Saadulaev etc waiting 90 min!

In Fedor's defense, Tim Sylvia replied:

I don't think it's fedor I think it's his people. He is not like that at all.

Schiavello then tweeted:

Thanks Tim, I think so too. Trouble is that management reflects on their clients, hence this reflects on Fedor.

My apologies to Fedor if that's the case, all I know we were TOLD "that is fedor's bus only"

That must have been a fun night.

Status: No updates but hopefully Fedor's bus will be marked as such in advance next time so there is no confusion and no one has to be booted off of it.

Jacob Volkmann vs. Barack Obama: After Jacob Wolkmann made such an awful joke in his UFC 141 post-fight interview that he had to explain it to crowd and still no one laughed, he did eventually get some response, although probably not the one he was hoping for.. Had it been a joke about something other than the president of the United States needing a "glassectomy", everyone probably would have just thought he was silly and awkward. But, given Wolkmann's prior history with post-fight interviews mentioning President Obama, which led to him being placed on paid administrative leave from his high school wrestling coaching position, he probably should have been a bit more careful. Apparently Volkmann was supposed to be adhering to four rules that were a result of the prior suspension. One of these rules was "No disrespectful name-calling in interviews (ie. idiot, moron, etc.)". This may be the one he violated this time around. Oops. You can read more about it here. Status: I'll all for expressing political opinions. I respect that. But, telling unfunny jokes? That really offends me.

The California State Athletic Commission vs. Cristiane Santos: Welp, we all know now that Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos tested positive for steroids after her fight on December 17 against Hiroko Yamanaka. Santos won the fight in quick and brutal fashion but the result has now been changed to "No Contest". She is now suspended by the California State Athletic Commission retroactively back to December 16, which is when the test was administered. This is obviously a major blow to Santos's MMA career and certainly can't be good for women's MMA. You can read more about it here and here and here. Status: We'll have to wait and see how long the suspension will be but even Dana White has conceded that this effectively kills the Strikeforce women's 145-pound division.

Dana White vs. Fedor Emelianenko: Dana White still thinks Fedor sucks. He told TMZ himself read about it here. Status: Huh?

Nate Diaz vs. Donald Cerrone: After all the good hype and drama leading up to UFC 141 between Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz, Diaz now says the feud is over. At the post-fight press conference, Diaz said:

"It's over now. We fought and we did what we had to do."

"No hard feelings. He's real tough and I knew he was gonna be. We just shook hands and it's cool. It's cool with me."

I guess it was good while it lasted.

Status: This is why I like guys. They fight and then they're over it. Girls are much meaner.

Matt Hughes vs. PETA: Everyone was talking about Matt Hughes and his lack of respect for PETA and bobcats this week. Poor kitties. It all started with a tweet:

Well, at least he warned people. Although, he warned them only after he'd already posted a picture of an adorable bobcat that he'd recently killed. I would have so much preferred to see a picture of Hughes wrestling and cuddling with a cute bobcat rather than posing behind a cold and dead one. But, it's his right and it's legal and Hughes is that sort of fellow. It turns out Hughes got a lot of support from his Twitter followers after posting his "PETA are idiots" tweet, and I know this because he retweeted damn near all of them. Here is a sampling for your amusement:

Your a legend of the sport man.. PETA and ANY animal rights group for that matter are a bunch of morons! Keep it up!!!!!

nice bobcat. people need to understand that hunting is part of conservation.

the funny thing about PETA is that they don't advertise that they put down far more animals than they save.

It's hypocritical for a group that "supports" animal rights to be responsible for the most animal deaths annually in the US.

Status: Well, there you go. Hughes keeps hunting and probably posting pictures of dead carcasses. I just won't look.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Fedor Emelianenko: I can't stop laughing at this one. Poor Fabricio. I think he was trying really hard to be friendly in this video below and to speak Croatian and really make an effort. And, then he told Fedor (and his priest), "I f*** your mother". Things got really awkward after that. Bless his heart. He was making such an earnest effort and was doing really well with the general time of day greetings, and then he dropped that bomb.

Status: I'm sure it's fine. Fedor's a diva, anyway.

B.J. Penn vs. Nick Diaz: B.J. posted a pretty nasty tweet to Nick Diaz on Thursday. After a little time spent wondering if it was really Penn and not just some hacker, it turns out it was Penn. It said:

Wow. B.J.'s mad. A day or so went by and then Cesar Gracie responded via graciefighter.com:

"BJ Penn has apparently not come to terms with the beating he received at the hands of Nick Diaz...."

"At some point it is up to those around you to protect you from yourself. To take you aside and let you know you are wrong and help save you from your folly. Unfortunately for Penn he is surrounded by "Yes Men" that are unwilling to do that. The outcome will be predictable, resulting in a fighter that will never push himself to the fullest and will always have excuses for his losses."

Penn then had a response to Cesar Gracie:

Status: I don't really know where this one will end up. Apparently, Penn is fired up again and wants to fight again so we'll see what comes of it.

Chuck Liddell vs. His Baby Mama: According to TMZ, Chuck Liddell was in court in Los Angeles to settle some issues regarding his child support payments to his ex, Lori Geyer. He happened to be in the same court on the same day as NFL players Terrell Owens and Marceded Lewis along with NBA player Roger Mason. All men were there for things pertaining to baby mamas. This all happened on Wednesday, but then on Friday, Chuck tweeted:

Newborns are sometimes really weird-looking but that's a pretty cute baby. Congrats, Chuck!

Status: Hopefully he got everything settled with his son and ex just in time to welcome the new baby. Best wishes to them all!
