Would Jose Aldo Move Up To Lightweight? Trainer Says Only For A Title Shot

Photo

With Jose Aldo having almost cleaned featherweight out, many are wondering if he would be willing to take his act up to lightweight. A superfight between Frankie Edgar and Aldo has intrigued fans for years. Would Aldo's speed be up to par with Frankie's style of quick boxing and footwork? Would Aldo's size negate all or would they be roughly the same? The scenarios go on and on.

Well, somewhat good news today as Jose Aldo's trainer Andre Pederneiras spoke to Sherdog about the likelihood of a lightweight Aldo:

"If it depends on me, it won't happen. Unless he leaves the team to train somewhere else and someone agrees with that, because I will not," the coach joked in an interview with Sherdog.com. "It won't happen for now, unless he goes straight for a title shot. Not, ‘Oh no, he left the featherweight belt, moved up to lightweight and started from the beginning,' no way."

This is good news for fans of the potential Edgar-Aldo showdown. Aldo might have a few challenges left at featherweight in Chan Sung Jung, Dustin Poirier, and Erik Koch. After that, it would be an tantalizing thought to see the potential champion vs. champion bout (assuming Edgar beats Ben Henderson). There is also so much depth at lightweight for Aldo to take on. Whatever the future holds, as long as we see Jose Aldo in the ring with a set of gloves on, I will be happy.

I believe his only loss came at 155, so it would make sense that he wants to stay at a lower weight

hes there for a reason

Not that edgar is much bigger or anything. But a ben henderson, maynard, etc. Would be fuckin huge for aldo.

Edgar still has a looooot of guys to go through. He’s been a great champ, and really proved he’s the shit. But he hasn’t dominated the division like aldo yet. I think if koch and poirior continue to win, they could both get a shot after the korean zombie. That’s a year of fights. By that time we haveanother challenger, and after that chad mendes has 4 wins under his belt and is ready for his shot against aldo. Then we have a cleared division (in my eyes and psychic mind)

But you never know. A year ago anderson had nobody. Now he has sonnen, vitor, and munoz all as viable opponents. Dude has a year of viable contenders.

The bottom line is Georges is being a little bitch. He didn’t step up and say anything when the UFC pulled me out of this fight. I understand sometimes you have to do what you’re told, but why wouldn’t you tell the media you still want to fight me? If I was Georges, I would want to fight the best. I would have asked for the Anderson Silva fight. I would have asked to fight the Strikeforce champ. But he sits there like a robot and doesn’t say anything at all, just like he’s not going to say anything about me calling him a bitch now. If I saw BJ Penn walking down the street and called him a bitch, we would be fighting right there on the spot. — Nick Diaz

same goes for gsp

Everyone was sayin he cleared the division. If he was healthy he would have diaz, condit, and ellenberger at the least. A year of opponents. Its so hard to say “someone cleans out the division after they win this one guy” cuz u never know what’s gonna happen between now and then
