Look Out For Falling Genius: The Gals' UFC 142 Predictions
Here we are back in Brazil for UFC Rio, The Sequel, also known as UFC 142. This exciting card takes place tomorrow night with the main pay-per-view card starting at 10:00 PM EST/7:00 PM PDT. The Facebook prelim (just one prelim) begins prior to the start of the prelims to be aired on FX, which begin at 8:00 PM EST/5:00 PM PDT. The only bad part of this card is that it is up against NFL playoffs so you may just have to stay up all night so you can watch one event live and then watch the DVR of the other one after. No biggie! Or, go to your local sports bar so you can watch both things at once.
Without further ado, here is what we Gals are predicting will happen in the fights tomorrow night.
Main Card (PPV)
Jose Aldo vs Chad Mendes
Beth: I think that Aldo is going to take this one, but he's not going to try very hard to do it. Maybe science can create a genetically engineered super fighter to challenge this guy? Aldo by whatever.
Kat: I can't see a way to really pick against Aldo in this one but I think Mendes will make it tough for him. So, Aldo by Decision.
Donna: Mendes is a lay and pray expert, but that's not going to do anything for him here. I just hope Also gets a nice TKO to end this fight early. Aldo by TKO.
Lizzie: Well Jose Aldo of course, I think Chad better watch out for Aldo's knees when he goes for a take down. ala Cub Swanson.
Jackie: I can't imagine Aldo not winning this, and I'm going to put my faith in him doing spectacularly. Aldo by TKO
Rachel: Choosing someone over Jose Aldo is the equivalent of choosing someone over Anderson Silva. Everybody knows that if you have a big enough pair to do that the MMA fairy will fly over to your place of residence and kick your bum. Aldo by decision.
Keren: I don't see Mendes bringing anything new to Aldo that he hasn't encountered before, but I can see Aldo bringing it to Mendes. Aldo by TKO.
Knitty: I think Jose will win, and will try to put on something that resembles a show since it's in Brazil. Then he'll smile super cute and I'll forgive him for anything. Aldo by decision.
More picks after the jump!
Vitor Belfort vs Anthony Johnson
Beth: This fight just leaves me blah. Belfort by Blah.
Kat: Well, I don't see Vitor Belfort taking another foot to the face to get KO'd but I do think he may spend a lot of time on his back. Anthony Johnson by Decision.
Donna: I was hoping that inspiration would strike as I was typing this, but not so much. Vitor is a hometown boy, but I think Johnson is going to take this one to the ground and keep it there. Johnson by Decision.
Lizzie: I agree with Beth, but if Vitor touches him first, it's lights out for Johnson.
Jackie: The question here is, can Belfort can throw that KO punch before Johnson gets a takedown? Johnson by decision (but I'm not happy about that)
Rachel: If Belfort wants to take this fight he better come out with some of his old aggression. I don't think his take down defense will be enough to stop the Rumble. Johnson by decision.
Keren: Johnson looks like a beast at middleweight, but is he faster? I picture Johnson trying to wrestle with Belfort, that is, if he can get to him before Belfort does.I hate to say it but Belfort by KO.
Knitty: Rumble at middleweight is going to be fun to watch... I hope. I think he'll get to Vitor first, and it'll be a Rumble in Rio by decision.
Beth: This should be a spectacular fight, but I think that Barboza will take this one. Do I dare predict fight of the night? Barboza by Decision.
Kat: Will it stay up or will it go down? (That's what she said!) Let's keep it up (that's what she said!) and go with Barboza by Decision
Terry Etim: I would love to see Etim win here, and we threw him a little bit of Pantydropper power, which will hopefully be the edge he needs to take it. Terry Etim by Submission.
Lizzie: Even though Terry's boxing is great, I predict Edson Barboza will take this one.
Jackie: Even when I probably should, I'm never going to pick against Barboza. Crippling leg kicks FTW!! Barboza by decision
Rachel: Etim may be able to hold off Barboza's dominant Muay Thai with his stand up skills. My intuition says Terry Etim.
Keren: This is tough. Barboza has some killer leg kicks, but Etim has some nice and fast submissions. Etim by submission.
Knitty: Kick me if I'm wrong. Barboza by decision.
Mike Massenzio vs Rousimar Palhares
Kat: Let's just go with the fun way here, shall we? Rousimar Palhares via some sort of limb-reducing submission.
Lizzie: I'll go with Palhares for this one.
Beth: Let's say Palhares shall we?
Donna: Let's just hope Palhares doesn't hold his submission for too long this time.
Jackie: I feel daring today. I'm going to go waaaaay out on a limb (no pun intended!) and say Palhares by submission
Rachel: Palhares via detached limb
Keren: Poor, poor Mike Massenzio. Palhares by submission.
Knitty: Rousimar Palhares is my FAVORITE name to say! I'm always trying to see if I can get the throat action going. (I know, TWSS...) Palhares by dismemberment.
Lizzie: Carlo Prater by submission.
Kat: Erick Silva looked good his last time out so I'll stick with him. Silva by Decision
Donna: Prater has some wins against big names, though they were early in his career. I think his work with Team Nogeuira and his BJJ black belt will protect him from a submission, but it's not going to prevent Silva eeking out a decision victory.
Jackie: Silva has been tearing it up in Jungle Fight for the past few years. Prater is a replacement in this fight for Siyar Bahadurzada, and his best wins were years ago. Right. Silva by submission
Rachel: Silva has been looking too good lately. He's fresh off of that 40 second KO of Luis Ramos. Silva via decision
Keren: I can't picture Prater winning this fight in any area. I've seen a bunch of Silva's fights and I'm a fan. It also doesn't hurt that he trains with champs. Silva by TKO.
Knitty: Only one Prater will be awesome this weekend, and he'll be kicking field goals in New England. Silva by KO.
Prelims (on FX)
Michihiro Omigawa vs Yuri Alcantara
Kat: This is tough but I think Yuri Alcantara looked really good his last time out and Omigawa has not been that solid. I'll go with Alcantara by Decision.
Lizzie: I'm not sure about this one, but Michi maybe.
Jackie: Come on, Michi! Make me proud! Omigawa via decision
Rachel: It makes me sad that Michihiro Omigawa is on the Prelims. Omigawa by decision.
Keren: Omigawa has been a bit disappointing, but the same can't be said for Alcantara. Alcantara by decision.
Knitty: I'm not sure about this one either. Omigawa by awesomer name.
Kat: This is a toughie. I feel like I shouldn't pick Sam Stout but I can't think of a good reason why. So, I'll say Stout by KO.
Beth: I didn't pick Sam Stout once. I was wrong not to. Stout because I said so.
Lizzie: Probably Tavares, though Sam is getting better every time he fights and he'll may win this one for Shawn.
Rachel: My head says Thiago Tavares but my heart says Stout. I don't trust organs with valves. Tavares by TKO
Keren: Stout looked great in his last fight, but so did Tavares. Damn. Stout by decision.
Knitty: I'm going with Stout by decision. He's looking good.
Gabriel Gonzaga vs Ednaldo Oliveira
Kat: I would feel bad not picking Gonzaga. Gonzaga by Submission
Beth: Gonzaga I guess. Blech.
Lizzie: Gonzaga
Rachel: MAN BEAR PIG! (Gonzaga)
Keren: I think Gonzaga will have some problems dealing with Oliveira's height/reach. Oliveira by TKO.
Knitty: Gonzaga by chest hair awesome submission.
Kat: Experience tells me to pick Mike Pyle and not Ricardo Funch. Pyle by Submission.
Beth: Power to the pantydropper. Pyle by dropped panties.
Rachel: I'm not sure if being covered in panties counts as a submission but I agree with Beth. Pyle just has too much going for him. Pyle by submission.
Keren: Pyle by submission.
Knitty: Pantydropper power will win out again. Pyle by submission.
Facebook Prelim
Felipe Arantes vs Antonio Carvalho
Kat: Felipe Arantes has that cowboy hat. Cowboy hats are not good luck lately. Carvalho by Decision.
Rachel: Is it bad to pick someone because their name is fun to say? : ) Carvalho.
Knitty: No, it's never bad to pick someone due to how fun their name is to say! I pick 43% of my fights that way! Carvalho. I hope I pronounced it right.

if johnson doesn't have a good fight and dana cuts him
i would be a sad panda but i would understand
You're crazy... I like you GG2MMA, but you're crazy

I don’t get why you think Rumble/Belfort is gonna be a snoozer. Rumble was probably the most powerful striker at WW, and now that he’s moved to (and overshot) MW, I expect the fireworks to continue. Rumble’s only decision in the UFC was against Dan “very incomplete game” Hardy, and Vitor has enough grappling accumen to force some striking exchanges.
