You Mad? - A Recap of this Week’s Beefs, Twitter Beefs, Squabbles, Rants, Wars of Words and Other Assorted Drama in MMA
So much for my theory about fight weeks not having very much drama. At least we weren't bored. Sadly, this may be the end of all the Bones vs. Rampage fun but don't worry, we still have Bones vs. Rashad to look forward to. And, I'm sure we'll find plenty of nonsense in the meantime. Now, on with the insanity!
Quinton Jackson vs. Jon Jones: They fought, obviously, but before the fight, Rampage was upset with Jones because he said Jones disrespected his coach at open workouts. Apparently Jackson's boxing coach, Matt Kinney, got into it verbally with Jones after Jones allegedly starting it by saying something to him. According to Kinney, it was just some back-and-forth and was no big deal but Rampage felt it was yet another example of the young whippersnapper being disrespectful. Rampage told reporters (courtesy of MMAFighting.com).
"It's very disrespectful what he did to my coach," Jackson said. "You don't come up to your opponent's coach and talk crap. For the honor and respect of this sport, you don't do that. Jon Jones says I fight for money, and this and that and he fights for fun and honor and stuff like that. But he's not showing the [signs] of a fighter who fights for honor. Yes, I fight for money, because this is the career I chose. But at the same time I have a lot of honor and respect for this sport and other fighters."
Kinney still maintained it was all fine and chose to focus on what Jones might be doing after the fight:
"They're going to be asking about his concussion. They're going to be asking whether he'll be in hospital for two weeks or four."
Kinney and Jackson both still maintain that Jones really did have a spy in the camp but they say they figured it all out:
"Let's just say he's hurting financially right now," Jackson said. "But we did find the spy, and as I suspected he wasn't a fighter."
So, this was all fine and everything was just going along and then Friday morning, when Rampage was making an appearance on Sportscenter, he outed the alleged spy. According to Rampage, the spy is actually an employee of MusclePharm, where Rampage had been training for his fight with Jones. In the Sportscenter appearance, Rampage refers to the spy as "Leonard" but says he does not want to say his last name out of respect for MusclePharm. Of course, this prompted a tweet from Jones:
Status: I don't know if someone really did get fired. In any case, as much as I love a little scandal, this whole spying thing had pretty much reached the acceptable level of absurdity and was on its way to unbearable ridiculousness. Fortunately, the fight has now happened so maybe we won't have to worry about it too much.
More drama and acceptable absurdity after the jump!
Alistair Overeem vs. Golden Glory: Remember a while back when all those fighters with Golden Glory got fired by Zuffa? I do. It started with Alistair Overeem not coming to terms with Strikeforce and then a few days later, Zuffa also severed ties with Golden Glory fighters Marloes Coenen, Jon Olav Einemo and Valentijn Overeem. At the time, the Golden Glory fighters stated they were publicly sticking together in support of each other and their management/trainers, Golden Glory. Dana White said it all happened because of how Golden Glory required payment for fights. But then, Alistair Overeem signed with the UFC and got a fight with Brock Lesnar scheduled for New Years Eve Eve, so it seemed Zuffa was able to work out some sort of a deal with Golden Glory.
Then this week, pretty unexpectedly, Alistair Overeem posted a tweet where he announced that he is no longer with Golden Glory and it is related to a "breach of trust":
As surprising as this seemed to all us normal folks, it seems it must have been even more shocking to Golden Glory executive Bas Boon who, when contacted by Fighters Only Magazine, seemed to not view the split in the same way as Overeem:
"There is a management contract in place and as long as this is honored we are fine with the decision from Alistair and wish Alistair much success in his further career."
Boon's statement is interesting because he clearly seems to feel the management relationship is still intact while Overeem seems to state that the management relationship was part of the issue. Adding to the confusion in this whole situation is that we now know that Jon Olav Einemo does, in fact, still have a contract with the UFC and that fellow Golden Glory fighter, Siyar Bahadurzada, has also been offered a UFC contract.
Status: I'm guessing more news about this will come out. This whole situation was somewhat overshadowed by other MMA-related happenings this week but maybe we'll know something more soon.
Vitor Belfort vs. Chael Sonnen: In an interview with Tatame.com, Vior Belfort discussed his injury that is forcing him out of his fight against Cung Le at UFC 139. He then continued on to discuss Chael Sonnen:
"I hope I can fight him. Let's get this trashtalker... I think it's the perfect timing, he's a good opponent and it's a fight that everybody wants to see. Even if Anderson (Silva) wants that fight, I believe he (Anderson) would give me this fight as a gift. I really want to fight him. If he wants to fight Anderson, I'd be a great test for him."
"I'd pound him out... Let's hope he wins this fight and the UFC puts him against me. That's the fight everybody wants to see."
In response, Chael tweeted on Wednesday:
On Thursday, Belfort posted a tweet in Portuguese that I translated (very poorly) and it basically said, "Sonnen fights on October and I want him to win so we can get at it in December and we will both ask for the fight." Or, something. Vitor Belfort posted another tweet to Chael Sonnen that said, "Hey Chael, if you couldn't see Nate's hands touch your face, what do you think is going to happen when we square off?" with a link to this Youtube video. It's a video of Chael talking about Nate Marquardt after the two fought (Chael came away victorious). Belfort also posted a link to another story from February 2010 where Chael says Belfort is a tougher opponent than Anderson Silva. And, Belfort posted a link to a story on his own website that says Sonnen could be his next opponent.
Chael responded with:
And, it's a completely juvenile and immature way to take the phrase "pound him out" but is precisely the way I thought of it when I read Belfort's quote. What? I'm 12.
Status: I honestly don't know where Belfort is getting all this. It kind of seems like he's creating this battle with Chael in his own mind. And really, his trash talk does not seem to be up to par for embarking on this sort of adventure. Seriously, it's not unique to call Chael out but you've got to bring your "A" game for that sort of call-out.
Jeff Monson vs. Pat Miletich: This one was a little crazy and it all went down on Twitter. I saw it going on and was going to capture it myself but I saw that FightOpinion.com did an excellent recap of it so I am going to refer to them. Basically, we have Jeff Monson and Pat Militech having a long and concerted debate about terrorism on Twitter.
It seems to have started with a Monson tweet about Palestine, Israel and the United States:
The US claims to be land of freedom and democracy yet is set to veto Palestinian bid in UN to become sovereign country to appease Israel.
Militech replies to Monson:
Palestinians elected a terrorist org (Hamas) to run it’s affairs and you’re siding with them over Israel? Pathetic.
And, I'm sure you can see how things would just go smoothly after this. Here is the back-and-forth, courtesy of FightOpinion.com:
JEFF MONSON: It's the Palestinian Authority going to UN to seek recognition as a state, Pat, not the Hamas. Same process Israel used in 1948.
PAT MILETICH: PA, PLO, Hamas. All under the same umbrella and dedicated 2 the destruction of Israel. You have sided with the terrorists, bud.
JEFF MONSON: Recent poll showed overwhelming majority of Israeli's want peace with Palestinians. As always it is government perpetrating violence.
PAT MILETICH: Everyone wants peace, Jeff. How do terrorists orgs make money, Jeff? Answer is simple. By continued terrorist acts.
JEFF MONSON: How can you not consider the US a terror organization? Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Indonesia, Vietnam, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. We've started civil wars, overthrown elected leaders, trained and funded terrorists, and presently occupy 2 countries and all in the name of money. Just cause we have tanks & not resorting to road side bombs doesn't mean it's not terrorism.
PAT MILETICH: No country is perfect, but ours is the best there is 2 offer. Your anti-American mentality is what our enemies like. Join ‘em. So have the Jews, bud. You support people who hack heads off with steak knives and I support the home team. Stand where you are. How's your gas prices compared to the rest of the world? Most civil wars were gonna happen anyways, but good guys needed guns.
JEFF MONSON: Supporting the right for the Palestinians to be recognize is in no way supporting terrorist organizations. If you wanna learn about terror organizations read "The people's history of the United States" by Howard Zinn. Our government is responsible for more oppresion, global poverty, and deaths than any other ‘terror' organization could ever hope to accomplish.
PAT MILETICH: So, you're blaming the world's poverty on the U.S.A? You're a joke, dude.
JEFF MONSON: To summarize, I don't support terror organizations. You obviously support the biggest one in history with naive patriotism.
PAT MILETICH: Listen, asshole. If you don't like your country, take a hike. Simple, bud. You rattle on about USA being evil yet you enjoy the fight money and sponsorship our capitalism provides. Walking contradiction.
JEFF MONSON: Don't you read any more? US corporations and banks, the IMF, and the World Bank run economies, impoverish countries, and dictate government policy. Maybe when Uncle Sam is done fucking the Palestinians at the UN he can come over to your place so you can suck his dick.
PAT MILETICH: You're dead to me.
(Josh Barnett just popped big for his catch phrase.)
JEFF MONSON: I'm a wage slave like everyone else, just trying to do my part to change the system.
PAT MILETICH: Change the system? Why, so upstart fighters make the same wage as a pay per view vet like you? You're a clown!
JEFF MONSON: That's an expected response for someone that doesn't have facts 2 what they say. Let's catch up after you take a history class.
PAT MILETICH: I can't figure out if you support socialism, communism, or anarchy. Honestly, I don't think you know.
JEFF MONSON: This is what happens when you get into a debate between someone who reads and has a master's degree in psychology & political science and... the other is a very good MMA trainer.
After their debate, Monson seems to have taken a break from Twitter but Militech tweeted that he enjoyed their debate and seemed in good spirits.
Status: Maybe they can agree to disagree? I wonder if they'll discuss it again on Twitter...
Miscellaneous Trash Talk:
"Be sure to say your prayers everyone! ‘Dear God, please give Matt Hughes the strength to bludgeon & maim stupid koscheck tomorrow'"
Dan Hardy (regarding the Matt Hughes vs. Josh Koscheck fight)
"I don't know which one of these two I dislike the most. #DoubleKnockoutPlease"
Jon Jones (on Rashad Evans at UFC 135)
"He’s ruined my special night twice now."
Rashad Evans:
"I smell a upset this weekend! @Rampage4real is gonna beat Bones!"
"So about to check in to finally go home, and who's in front of me in the check in line? Yep @mayhemmiller"
"Our public truce will be over soon enough @bisping"

Oh thank God somebody captured the Monson vs. Miletich Twitter war. I’m just sad Miletich’s spelling was corrected.

I'd have to say Monson came out looking better
It’s kind of hard to discuss America’s history of economic “terrorism” and imperialism in 146 characters or less. I’d say trying works better than “Americaaaaa. Fuck yah!”

this piece, and the website in general. I haven’t visited this place much, but I enjoy the tongue-in-cheek nature of it all. Hilarious exchange between Monson and Militech.
