Marloes Coenen Disputes Dana White's Statements on Her Release From Strikeforce
Marloes Coenen took to Twitter again to make a few more statements about her release from Strikeforce along with Golden Glory teammates John-Olav Einemo and Valentijn Overeem. This time she specifically responded to Dana White's statements about why Zuffa severed ties with the Golden Glory fighters.
The photo below is the link that Coenen included in her tweet which appears to be a check payment made directly to her from Forza, LLC. Forza, LLC is a subsidiary of Zuffa, LLC, and is the arm of Zuffa which owns Strikeforce.
So far there has been no reply from Dana White. The comments from Dana White about the situation are below, as reported by MMA Fighting:
"This is actually a pretty simple explanation," he said. "If you look back throughout history, we haven't had any Golden Glory guys fight with us since Semmy Schilt, right? And the reason is we have very different business practices. It's tough to do business with them. The bottom line is the way they do business is, you have to pay them, not the fighters. We don't work that way. It's not the way we do business. It's not how it works in the United States with the athletic commissions. You don't pay the managers and the managers pay the fighters. You pay the fighters and the fighters pay the managers."
White went on to say that while they had previously honored existing Strikeforce deals, it became apparent Golden Glory management wouldn't change their long-held practices.
"They won't do it," he said. "We have to pay them, not the fighters."
Coenen's comments and White's comments seem to be at odds here.
Marloes also promised to give an interview in the next few days to fully express her thoughts on the situation:
I have had a lot of requests for interviews & I know that the fans are curious about my reaction about the current situation. I'll do an interview in the next three days. Please be patient with me, as you can imagine the impact it has on me.

hmm...
The way I took it was that Marloes was paid directly by Zuffa and that the mgt wanted future paychecks made out to them, so they could pay the fighters… Know what Im saying? So Marloes reinforced what Dana was saying about paying the fighters directly. That’s how I took it originally. I think the media has gone off the deep end with this one. More of a misunderstanding.
Having read DFW's comments...
…I find it a bit presumptuous of him to think he’s entitled to control the relationship between Coenen and her management company. Because that’s what this payment issue boils down to — White is attempting to dictate the arrangement between fighters and their managers, and this is entirely outside the scope of his role as president of Zuffa. Further, he claims that he’s “pro-fighter,” implying that he’s looking out for the fighters’ best interests, but this is also without merit. Not only does it require us to believe that White knows better than the management companies who negotiate on fighters’ behalves, but he’s also effectively claiming to know better than the fighters themselves what’s in their best interest, since it’s safe to assume that each fighter chooses to sign with the management s/he believes will best represent him or her. Likewise, if his concern is that Golden Glory is somehow taking advantage of their fighters or skimming their checks, how does firing those fighters — i.e. taking away their primary means of employment — protect them from management abuses? It doesn’t, it merely solves the problem of dealing with a management company who actually wants to negotiate instead of rolling over and submitting to Zuffa’s demands.
I found this article to be quite interesting regarding the whole GG/Zuffa debacle… Of particular note are White’s claims regarding the state athletic commissions, and the statement by Josh Gross that Coenen told him she prefers to let GG handle her checks for tax purposes (if I had to guess, I’d say GG is probably entitled to certain tax breaks that aren’t available to individuals, and being “paid” by GG instead of Zuffa could result in higher net income for Coenen, but tax law isn’t my specialty…)
I stand by my belief that this is just Zuffa “cleaning house” and nothing more…guess we’ll see what happens!
There's a good reason for Dana's line of thinking.
I find it a bit presumptuous of him to think he’s entitled to control the relationship between Coenen and her management company. Because that’s what this payment issue boils down to

Dana's mistaken, though...
Semmy isn’t the last GG fighter they’ve (the UFC) dealt with. They signed JOE (then shafted him, too). I dunno, I think there’s more to Zuffa releasing these guys than has come out yet. We’ll see.

Oh, of course there is.
But people seem to want to forget that the UFC is a business, not a fighters’ union, and DFW’s primary obligation is to the shareholders (you know, all four of them). His job is to make money for Zuffa, and if that goal conflicts with what’s best for the sport or the fighters, too bad. I don’t begrudge Dana his ruthless business practices; what gets to me is the insistence on pretending that he’s some sort of fairy godfather to the sport of MMA. Hell, it’s not even the pretending that gets to me, it’s that he’s so BAD at it. He screws over a fighter to the benefit of Zuffa and then offers some flimsy excuse when he’s asked about his actions. If he’d just drop the bullshit and be straight with the fans, I’d have alot more respect for him. /endrant
