This is why you get your hearth checked guys....The Widow Maker

From Wiki…

A widow maker is a nickname used to describe a highly stenotic left main coronary artery or proximal left anterior descending coronary artery of the heart.

This term is used because if the artery gets abruptly and completely occluded it will cause a massive heart attack that will likely lead to a sudden death. The blockage that kills is made up of platelets streaming to the site of a ruptured cholesterol plaque. Even a small amount of plaque in this area can (for a variety of poorly understood reasons) rupture and cause death; bypassing chronic blockages or trying to open them up with angioplasty does not prevent heart attack but it can restore blood flow in case of a sudden blockage or heart attack. An example of the devastating results of a complete occlusion of the LAD (Left Anterior Descending) artery was the sudden death of former NBC News Washington Bureau Chief Tim Russert.

From the minute a widow maker hits, there is a five-minute window of time to get to a hospital or receive emergency care.

Scary stuff.

Tompkin's manager says that he had a family history of heart problems.

This happened to two people I know. Both were quite young (21 and 43). The 21-year-old did not know one side of his family so we don’t know if there was a family history of heart problems. The 43-year-old’s father died at a similarly young age of a heart attack, as well. He was very fit and was playing hockey when it happened. He did get checked regularly but sometimes it still gets you. It’s tragic.

Happened to my old Pastor

On New Year’s day a couple of years ago. He barely made it but is now doing well. Had to change his entire lifestyle though, diet, exercise program, more rest, everything had to change.

How come you sound so sure if I may ask? Haven’t seen this (or anything else) presented as official cause of death.

Either way, be sure to stay away from salty foods and balance up your saturated fat intake with unsaturated fats, people!

This is how

Last weekend, Shawn Tompkins, the acclaimed MMA trainer, died unexpectedly at the age of 37. Sam Stout, a trainee and brother-in-law to Tompkins (Tompkins was married to Stout’s sister), told the London Free Press that Tompkins died of a heart attack.

“I don’t know what to say,” Stout says. “It’s not supposed to be happen to a healthy 37-year-old person. Who would think he had to get checked out for that?”
