Miguel Torres Cut From UFC After Tweeting Rape Joke

Photo

According to Dana White's interview with SI.com, he seems to be tiring of the inappropriate jokes centering around rape and sexual assault. A little bump in the road was hit yesterday when Rashad Evans made a joke about him "putting his hands on you (PSU alumnus Phil Davis) worse than that guy at Penn State." Dana didn't pick up on it at the presser, but he confronted Rashad after the event.

Miguel Torres didn't get it so easy. Miguel tweeted "If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn't mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises." That tweet was deleted almost immediately, then changed to this. Sadly, where Rashad is a star and draw for the UFC, Miguel Torres proved to be expendable. Dana White had this to say in his interview:

SI.com: And what about Miguel Torres’ tweet from yesterday?

White: This morning I’m on [Michael] Landsburg’s show, up here in Canada, and he hits me with the quote of what he tweeted. Now there’s no explanation for that. There’s absolutely nothing I could say to make any sense of that. And the fact that he even thinks that’s funny or that’s a joke, it disturbs me. It bothers me. Again, you’re dealing with a guy that’s a smart guy, that owns his own business, that’s been one of the top fighters in the world forever. And I cut him today. He’s no longer with the UFC.

SI.com: Was that announced today?

White: It’s being announced right now to you. You’re the only one that knows. Miguel Torres has been cut from the UFC and his career with us now is over.

Sadly, these jokes are becoming more and more recycled in lieu of the Penn State incident. We first had Forrest Griffin giving us this gem. Now, Evans and Torres have rehashed the subject matter and are causing a colossal scene in the MMA community. Will Torres' head be a good enough example for fighters to walk the line?

I think that he should be punished but I think that firing is a bit harsh and I think this is unfair considering that Forrest Griffin wasn’t fired and his rape tweets were worse. But, I guess maybe Dana decided to take action from that point forward (unless the offender is Rashad Evans?) and Miguel is seeing the impact. In any case, given what happened with Forrest and the reaction people had then, Torres should have known better.

Yeah, but for Rashad to not get any slap on the wrist for this is kind of…yeah. I love Torres, and he comes up with a good corny joke a time or two. This was pretty severe.

I guarantee if Torres’ performances in the UFC were not “boring” or they were slug fests , he would still have a UFC job.

Yes sir! I’m struggling to think here, but I am sure there are more cases where the UFC has done less to those who have done more.

It seems that the main problem is that Miguel was not remorseful at all. I hope that since Dana has decided to go there with Miguel, he’ll do the same for others. But maybe a suspension? Getting dropped seems harsh!

Forrest did the same thing, if you recall. He acted like a total douche until an actual rape victim tweeted him. Granted, could be because Miguel should have known that this was already a hot issue in MMA, but still. Don’t kill the golden geese, eat the lowly chicken instead.

But Miguel, even after people called him out on it, continued to act like a douche. I think that had something to do with it.

Yeah, you're right.

I forgot that the woman had to specifically point out she was a rape victim before he apologized.

He did.

Dana didn’t like what he heard, apparently.

Forrest was being a dick, but then realized he was being a dick. He then tried to kinda fix things. Torres just tells Dana he didn’t know what happened with Forrest – which is a dumb thing to say – and apparently just told Dana that it was a joke.

Well, in fairness, it was just a joke. Not a good one. Nor one with any taste. But Miguel probably should have known. If he didn’t, he should understand he has a certain place in the spotlight that doesn’t really warrant these kind of jokes.

YES!

I agree completely! He should have known better. I think that’s the crux of this whole situation. And if nothing else, he should have known to turn around and at least act like he wished he hadn’t done it.

Well, guys should also know their role. If you were relegated to a Facebook prelim last fight…know that you are expendable and that you aren’t worth dick to the UFC. Miguel is smart enough to know that.

They made an example of him

They will use this for PR “We don’t condone this. Miguel Torres was cut for it and is a top fighter” Then they will use this as an example to fighters “We don’t condone this. Miguel Torres was cut for it and so will you”.

Hopefully, after this message is pounded into the media and fighter’s consciousness, and Torres isn’t so valuable as an example anymore, they will let him back in to fight where he belongs.

This fucking sucks.

The bottom line is Georges is being a little bitch. He didn’t step up and say anything when the UFC pulled me out of this fight. I understand sometimes you have to do what you’re told, but why wouldn’t you tell the media you still want to fight me? If I was Georges, I would want to fight the best. I would have asked for the Anderson Silva fight. I would have asked to fight the Strikeforce champ. But he sits there like a robot and doesn’t say anything at all, just like he’s not going to say anything about me calling him a bitch now. If I saw BJ Penn walking down the street and called him a bitch, we would be fighting right there on the spot. — Nick Diaz

I agree that there was definite favoritism, but Forrest and Rashad know they are pretty much untouchable.

Double standard

If the UFC fighters ever unionized stuff like this would never happen.
NHot that I advocate Unions, they’re often corrupt and destructive, but still.
Stuff like this would never fly in the NFL, or NBA.

I think that you can’t call Forrest and Rashad a double standard for the simple fact that there is no standard. Each time, the punishment for the offence was escalated. Forrest got a talking to, Rashad got Fined, and now, Torres has been fired.

well, there goes that pretense. But my point I think, is still valid. But when dana said

We don’t come out at the UFC with these canned statements that are written by our lawyers, we handle everything on a case by case basis, with the idea that people are going to make mistakes. And it’s how you handle yourself after you make that mistake."

It implies that their was (and maybe still is) No standard for how these things are handled. Therefore there cannot be a double standard.

by BIGNAT on Dec 9, 2011 8:09 PM EST reply actions

Just because it didn’t happen to Forrest and Rashad doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happened to Miguel. But we can’t change what already happened ie Forest’s and Rashad’s lack of punishment. If this is the new precedent being set (and that remains to be seen) then it’s unfair to persecute infractions that happened before the new policy was set.
