You Mad? - A Recap of this Week’s Beefs, Twitter Beefs, Squabbles, Rants, Wars of Words and Other Assorted Drama in MMA
Welcome to another recap of all the things everyone decided to complain and argue about the week after Thanksgiving. I guess they had lots of love and gratitude the week before and decided enough was enough and let's get back to normal. Oddly, though, people were quite a bit less fighty this week than they were last week. I guess not everyone is a fan of the holidays.
Here is what everyone was all upset about this week...
Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva: Well, here's a new one! And, by "new" I mean "not at all new" and "see also: old". But, who cares? It's fun! Remember after Chael Sonnen called out Anderson Silva at UFC 136 when we all waited to see if Silva would agree to it and if he would do so publicly? Well, he didn't and he's hurt and Chael's fighting Mark Munoz now but people are still asking Anderson about his feelings on Chael. In an interview with MMA Weekly, Silva was asked specifically about his thoughts on Chael's World MMA Awards joke about Silva's shoulder injury and what he thought of it. Anderson simply replied,
"Nothing."
He continued on to explain that he fights and trains for his family and that he's here to fight and it doesn't matter who he fights. Fair enough. However, if you were to ask Sonnen (which Bleacher Report did), you'd hear a different story.
According to the interview, Chael thinks that Anderson is looking for a way out of having to fight him. And, he thinks that Silva's entire camp is to blame, too:
"Listen, are you fighters or aren't you? The Blackhouse have so many excuses. They just should just be called Team Backout."
Chael also think that by avoiding him, Silva is shaming Brazil and the culture of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu:
"He disrespected his entire culture," Sonnen said. "His culture is not one that sits in your chair like a little fruity boy if you're called out. His culture steps forward and takes a fight."
"He not only embarrassed himself but insulted his entire heritage, and that stunned me. One thing I know about a Brazilian-if you challenge a Brazilian to a fight, you will be fighting him. For him to sit in his chair an do nothing was shameful to his people."
Yet, despite Silva completely ignoring his challenge from UFC 136, Chael is not ready to give up on that rematch just yet:
"There's another challenge against Anderson Silva coming down the pike," Sonnen said, "but he should have accepted the first one. The first one was a lot nicer than the second one will be."
Status: Of course now Chael needs to get through Mark Munoz before he can get another shot at Silva. Or, not. I'm pretty sure he'll try to talk his way into it even if he loses. And, that's fine because I'll still want to see it.
More dramatic fun and Miscellaneous Trash Talk after the jump...
Miesha Tate vs. Ronda Rousey (with a little Marloes Coenen thrown in for good measure): A few weeks ago, Ronda Rousey tore off Julia Budd's arm at Strikeforce Challengers 20 and then called out Sarah Kaufman and Miesha Tate. Most all of the other Strikeforce women's fighters were unhappy about that and got on Rousey's case. Rousey then went on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani to discuss it and Tate was even more upset. This week, both Tate and Rousey made an appearance on The MMA Hour to talk things out and debate their stances on Rousey's challenge. It was a pretty good debate and then Tate brought up Rousey being pretty and basically said that Sarah Kaufman is not.
As it turns out, someone recommended that Marloes Coenen listen to the interview, which she did, and then Coenen had some issues with Tate. She made a few posts about it on Twitter, taking particular issue with how the other ladies discussed Sarah Kaufman. Coenen then also gave an interview to Full Contact Fighter where she basically said that Tate can't complain about getting sexual attention from men in talk threads when she posts pictures of herself in a thong with her jeans pulled down and in her less-than-modest Wonder Woman Halloween costume. Coenen also pointed out that Tate took offense to Rousey's comment that she wants to slap the championship belt out of Tate's hands, but that Tate said similar things to about Coenen when she was the challenger for Coenen's belt. Coenen said that all these girls are pretty normal-looking girls and not supermodel types so this whole "who's prettier than someone else?" business is nonsense (but she did concede that Gina Carano is super pretty). She then laid the smack down and said female professional athletes should not talk about the looks of other female athletes in public because it's degrading and disrespectful. You go, girl!
Of course, Tate had a Twitter response. She first denied that the thong picture is here (which could totally be a valid claim on her part):
Then, she replied to someone saying that Coenen seemed "bitter". Tate continued with an additional tweet explaining that it wasn't her butt because she is in better shape than that:
And, she pointed out that you could see her real butt in a magazine:
Marloes, being classy like she is, apologized for assuming that it was Miesha's butt in the thong photo:
Naturally, Miesha still felt victimized by Marloes:
Tate then continued to debate the topic on Twitter right up until she cornered boyfriend Bryan Caraway on Saturday at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale. She seems to be engaging in the public conversations because she badly wants to get people to take her side. This approach never works.
Status: I'm sure we'll hear more about it. So far, Tate has not denied that the photo of her butt on her Twitter page is actually of her.
T.J. Dillashaw on TUF and Michael Bisping: Being a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter seems like it would be such a great opportunity for a fighter to showcase his talents, get some TV time, train with experienced coaches and get to fight with some other guys who are pretty good, too. Yes, living in the TUF house seems a little like the freshman dorms in college with all those other dudes hanging around in their underwear, cooking food, doing shots and eating bugs, but it's still only for six weeks so it seems like it might not be so bad. Unless you ask T.J. Dillashaw about it.
In an interview with Pro MMA Radio (via MMA Mania), Dillashaw expressed his displeasure at what he had to endure during the filming of TUF:
"[Prisoners] almost have it even better. They get to watch TV, they don't have to make weight, they get to listen to music, they don't have cameras following them around everywhere they go in the house. It was crazy, man. You're hanging out with people you could possibly be fighting with shortly. You don't know who or what's going on, you've got people getting in cliques together, talking crap about each other, hearing the same stories that guys are telling over and over and over because they're running out of crap to talk about. Some of the guys are out of the tournament so they're getting drunk and being ridiculous. It's crazy when you have that much testosterone in one house."
I'm guessing T.J. has never caught any reruns of "Oz" because on "Oz", guys get in fights, too, but usually someone dies from being shanked or shived. And, they couldn't have a pool in "Oz" because surely someone would drown an entire gang or something. And, the only prison where I've ever seen them serving drinks is in "Shawshank Redemption" when Tim Robbins gave the mean guard financial advice in an effort to barter for buckets of beer for other roofers. But otherwise, TUF seems EXACTLY like prison.
Dillashaw also had some issues with his coach, Michael Bisping, which really is not unexpected or surprising. Dillshaw did well on the show, making it to the final match in The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale, but he did not care for come of Bisping's hijinks:
"The worst thing, he gets involved in competitions, any type of competition that there is. The competition was pranking each other and being jerks to the other team and he exceeded that level and kinda pushed it to the extreme, he wanted to be the best at what we were doing so I think he was being a bit of a hypocrite at some points and kinda got out of hand in terms of antagonizing the other team."
Dillashaw did not, however, go so far as to say he blamed Tiki for everything, even though Tiki was clearly the mastermind behind all the pranks from Team Bisping.
Status: T.J. is back with Team Alpha Male and away from the harsh conditions in the TUF house. He also ended up losing to John Dodson at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale. I blame Tiki.
Karo Parisyan on Chris Leben and the UFC: Matt Roth at Bloody Elbow posted a fantastic interview with Karo Parisyan last week where he got Parisyan's thoughts on many topics including Chris Leben testing positive for banned substances after his UFC 138 loss to Mark Munoz. Leben stated that he is currently battling a painkiller addiction and Dana White stated that the UFC will stand by him and give him the the support he needs through his ordeal. Parisyan has had similar ordeals and battles with painkillers in the past, so he naturally had some pretty strong opinions about Leben's situation.
When Roth asked Parisyan if the UFC offered him the same type of financial and emotional support as they offered Leben, Parisyan said:
When I got popped for it for two pain medications with a prescription. Everybody turned on me. "Oh my god why did he get popped?" I understand why Dana got hurt because of my situation with him. I had a legitimate reason. I had a legitimate script. And I got suspended for 9 months, $32,000 fine, are you f*cking kidding me? I heard Leben got suspended with no fine. Leben's been suspended for a year. Are you kidding me? Who am I? Am I the red headed stepchild here? What the f*ck happened to me? Apparently commissions are different. Well it should be the same f*cking punishment for everything. That's the way I see it. Come on, are you kidding me? I didn't take an enhancement drug to help me beat Dong Hung Kim. On the contrary, I was f*cking drooling in the second round. I didn't even know where I was because I was on pain medications for my leg. I still won the fight and they took $32,000 from me and at the same time I got a 9 month suspension for that? It doesn't make anything sense. You should put two and two together and it doesn't make any sense. And if someone tells me it makes sense let them come tell it to me and maybe I can put it in better terms. I feel that it is really unfair for what I went through. I'm not saying that Chris didn't go through the same thing. I know somewhat what Chris might be going through. I wish him the best. But I'm just saying that I'm a fighter too. I paid my dues too. I put this sport on the map too in certain ways. I shouldn't have been treated any differently than Chris or any other fighter.
Parisyan also said that he may have gotten mixed up in the politics of the fight game because he was too honest all the time:
It's the politics. It's what I mean when I say the soap opera and the politics behind it. That's the politics. That's the bullsh*t that goes on in the sport of mixed martial arts. Whether people want to accept it or not, that's what it is. I'm never afraid to say it or do it. I'll say whatever I want whenever I want and if anybody has got something to say, they can say it to me. Listen, my biggest problem has always been that I've been too honest in my interviews and it always bit me in the ass. But I'm being honest. It's not fair. There should be a certain thing. If you do this, this is what you get. No. It's not fair. If I didn't get that. If I got this then why didn't he get the same thing? And it didn't even make sense. The rules don't even make f*cking sense.
Parisyan was also asked whether he thinks problems with painkiller addictions in MMA will continue to worsen because of the nature of fighting and the constant elevation of competition in the cage and in training. He responded:
Of course. It's common sense buddy. Think of it this way. Listen, I never wanted to take the pain medication. I didn't even know what the f*ck a vicodin was. My friends would talk about it. I was like "who the hell takes a pill? Isn't a pill like if you're sick you take a pill?" And they're like "Yeah". Like if you talk about drugs, cocaine yeah that's a drug. But like when they would talk about vicodin and pills, what are you guys even talking about? Who takes pills? I didn't know anything about it. I tore my hamstring and I got the pain medications and I still didn't know what the hell vicodins were. But eventually when you're body starts to crumble and you can't get out of bed in the morning because your body hurts so much that you can't even bend down bro. You can't even bend down to pick something up because everything hurts. Because you got your ass pounded yesterday by 10 friggin guys at the gym. I came out wrong what I just said but you know what I'm talking about. You got beat up. Eventually your body is gonna want something to recover. Yeah there's other stuff. Yeah let's be healthy. Let's do this. Yeah that's fine. But eventually, if you break something. I have a big knot in the back of my hamstring that was killing me. I didn't do anything for it. I took a pain medication here and there. I didn't have to but I did. It's an addictive thing that's why people take it and sometimes they start getting addicted to it because it's a narcotic. But the longer you're in the sport, the more odds there is that you're gonna touch that stuff.
Parisyan continued on to express regret for the mistakes he made with the painkillers and to say he accepts the blame for the things that have happened to him:
Listen, there's a lot of things in my life that I can kind of look back and say "I wish I didn't do this" and "I wish I didn't do that". I've always said in interviews with people that I dug my own grave. I man up to it. I never blame people. I blame people when people try and step over and walk away. That didn't give me a hand to pick me up. People that claimed they were friends and family and etcetera. But there's always going to be things. I can't pinpoint something. Yeah I wish had trained more for the fight. I wish I hadn't taken the pain medication to get popped for it. I wish say that a chick that she left me god knows how long ago. I wish I didn't do all this stuff. But then again, you've done it. You've gotta look ahead and go on.
Parisyan also says that he loves his true fans and that he hopes to have the "second era" of his life in the next six or seven years. He wants to make one more run in the UFC and he doesn't want to "screw it up".
Status: I wish only the best for Karo and for Leben. I'd love to see them both get back on track and come bck stronger.

Oh my goodness. The girl fighting is getting out of control. What a sad state of affairs that these women resort to fighting. Along with bashing each other for looks, they’re also really helping out the image that women can’t get a long with each other. Nicely done, ladies.

I originally thought Rampage said the Japanese people gave him GIFs, not gifts.
Either way, that’s called living the good life.

who are those ladies? they look familiar...
and who is that whore in the middle?
That picture is totally Miesha. Bryan Caraway tweeted it last year. And if you tell me someone actually has enough time on their hands to make a fake Bryan Caraway account…just no. You couldn’t pay me to act that loopy.

why would ubitch bout one pic
But have the same thing on your facebook? Let’s attack marloes and be butthurt cuz ooooone pic she mentioned isn’t meisha, yet everything else is. Same point
Meisha tate was losing my respect with this bullshit. Her continueing it while backstage with caraway on fight night up until the walk out and then continueing after the fight? Fuck that shit. Caraway can do better
The bottom line is Georges is being a little bitch. He didn’t step up and say anything when the UFC pulled me out of this fight. I understand sometimes you have to do what you’re told, but why wouldn’t you tell the media you still want to fight me? If I was Georges, I would want to fight the best. I would have asked for the Anderson Silva fight. I would have asked to fight the Strikeforce champ. But he sits there like a robot and doesn’t say anything at all, just like he’s not going to say anything about me calling him a bitch now. If I saw BJ Penn walking down the street and called him a bitch, we would be fighting right there on the spot. — Nick Diaz

Eh, I’ll debate that last part. But yeah. It isn’t even THAT racy of a picture in comparison to some stuff that gets out these days. Just admit it and move on. I don’t think people are going to care. You’ll just be confirming public knowledge. Miesha needs to chill out and just stop taking herself so seriously.

Yes, Miesha,
all your other pics. Unless stuff like this is meant to let people know you’re a serious fighter who doesn’t pose in revealing clothing, and guys shouldn’t have ‘thoughts’ about you.
As far as Karo goes, his whole situation just breaks my heart, but the truth is that Leben came from that first season of TUF, has a marketable style, and came from that first season of TUF. He’s going to always have a job the same way Forrest and Bonnar will. Also, I don’t think Leben has ever had to pull out of a fight in the UFC for any reason, much less doing it the day before the event.
