Zoila Frausto-Gurgel: The Undeserving Bellator 115 Champion

Let me start by saying I am not a Zoila Frausto-Gurgel hater nor am I going to sit here and let you believe I am unbiased. I like most men get enticed by attractive female fighters more so than not. Or will I tell you I have watched all her fights, where I have actually only watched her Bellator bouts. In addition, I do find Zoila "not hard on the Aguilar_v_frausto_medium

via bellatorfights.com

eyes" and very "manageable" to put it politely. I'm sure Jorge Gurgel manages her mightily at home. I also witnessed her knocking the fuck out of 11-2 Rosi Sexton. One of the most brutal WMMA knocks out I have seen. However, she is underserving of the title of Champion, let alone 115 pound champion.

Star-divide

As mentioned above Zoila knocked Rosi out cold (with a devastating knee) at a catch weight of 121. This allowed her to penetrate the confines of the Bellator Womens 115 Tournament. In her first bout she took an uncontroversial 30-27 Unanimous Decision over Jessica Penne.

Next up was Jessica Aguilar and this is where my qualms start. Throughout the 3 round bout we see a pattern form with Zoila chasing Aguilar, but Aguilar countering with more shots. We have heard this many, many times from the mouth of Mike Goldberg, emphasizing "Octagon Control" whatever the fuck that is. 2 judges scored in 30-27 for Zoila and 1 30-27 for Aguilar.

Zoila, the undeserving one, as most would think would be served up on a platter to Megumi Fujii, the number one 115 in the world. I don't argue this fight as I thought Megumi's camp/corner/coach whoever the fuck it was told her to stand for the majority of the fight is idiotic. Clearly, the times Megumi went for takedowns she got them and could have summited Zoila, stop her with punches or won with dominant control if she did this over the 5 rounds she had.

With this victory of a women, who had to starve herself to make 115, went through two opponents she clearly lost to and was going to if not for a shitty gameplan. And there you have Zoila Frausto-Gurgel, a fraud, who handcuffed the women's 115 division of Bellator.

You should be able to edit the HTML on the fan post.

There are two tabs on the “Body” section when you’re editing a fan post. You type everything in the “Visual View” tab but there is another one called “HTML View”. I think the easiest way to do it is to put the picture at the very top of your post (before any of the words) in the Visual View. Then, go to the HTML View and there will be a “< p >” at the very top. Change this to “< p class=”left" >" to put the photo on the left and your text on the right, or to “< p class=”right" >" to put the photo on the right and your text on the left. There are other fancy things you can do, too, but those are basics.

Also, below the Body section, there are a bunch of tabs and if you check out the “Style Tips” tab, you can get more info about how to make your posts look pretty.

The bottom line is Georges is being a little bitch. He didn’t step up and say anything when the UFC pulled me out of this fight. I understand sometimes you have to do what you’re told, but why wouldn’t you tell the media you still want to fight me? If I was Georges, I would want to fight the best. I would have asked for the Anderson Silva fight. I would have asked to fight the Strikeforce champ. But he sits there like a robot and doesn’t say anything at all, just like he’s not going to say anything about me calling him a bitch now. If I saw BJ Penn walking down the street and called him a bitch, we would be fighting right there on the spot. — Nick Diaz

It's difficult

to place photos in a fanpost unless you can edit the HTML (at least, as far as I know).

As far as the fight with Megumi, I’ve watched it several times and EVERY TIME I see Megumi winning. Zoila had good striking, but she didn’t do anything but back up the entire fight. Yeah, it was stupid for Megumi to not use her wrestling more, but I still think she won that fight. A few good punches don’t make up for going backward the whole time and doing more missing than connecting.

i love this post yes

she kills herself to make weight she should be fighting at 135 or maybe even 145. she lost to megumi and got the american win gift. she is never gonna defend that belt i just don’t think she can make the weight again. i remember when they were talking to her about cutting weight. it was so hard for her she was thinking of cutting off her hair just to lose more ounces on the scale.

Yes,

I would tune in for sure for a 125 pound womens tourney. The 115 womens tourney was one of the deepest tournaments i think

by yellopanda on Dec 4, 2011 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Shes a 125er

At 135 she was very undersized. Meisha Tate was just too big and strong for her, and Meisha isn’t a big 135er. I dont think she’s fought at 135 since.

115 is killin it too. She doesn’t have that same violent pep in her step. 125 is her division for sure.

Zoila Lost 2 of 3 Bouts

She lost those two bouts
It was highway robery
Bellator was shooting for a “Carano moment”
hence Zoila looking so good when made up
and well not so good when she fights
But she got the belt, won’t defend it
and Bellator says they are dropping the most packed class in WMMA
maybe just to avoid having to admit that she can’t make the wieght on a regular basis if at all.
they don’t have Cyborg, Tate, Rousey or Carano
so they will have to make do with Zoila at whatever weight they can get her able to make

by kah on Dec 5, 2011 2:18 PM EST reply actions

Thats the issue.

Think of how different things would be with Megumi as the winner, and not having to promote a “Champion” with two controversial victories. With Megumi they would have had in my opinion the top p4p womens fighter and be able to run more stacked 115 tournaments. Now they’re gonna run a 125 tournament so their “champ” can fight in it?

also, i rapped your post to the beat of ‘Juicy’

by yellopanda on Dec 5, 2011 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Bellator had nothing to do with those decisions

I don’t understand this “won’t defend her belt” nonsense. She came out of the tournament and hurt herself pretty badly. Then Bellator gave her a non-title bout, like they do with all their champions (who never get enough fights in, its not just Zoila). She then broke her hand in that bout and was out for a long time. Then training to come back she tore her knee.

Really, she’s had a string of three very bad injuries and one fight since the tournament.

Bellator also never said they are dropping the 115 lbs division (if thats what you mean by most stacked female division). Right now they are actually debating 115 or 125 for the next female tournament, or no tournament at all. It depends on upcoming signings. They have a few girls for each division at the moment. It has nothing to do with Zoila not being able to make the weight (who didnt come in over 115 even once, while on a super ridiculous once a month basis, and who has stated that she will stay at 115 if she is told to)

Not to be a dick here, but shit man. You think she lost the Fujii and the Aguilar fights. I get it. I understand that. I can’t blame you. But don’t let yourself drink the hater-aid. It makes you type ridiculousness

On another note, would Bellator not have been much better, if the winners were forced to re-enter the Tournaments?

With the pretty tight knit Champion clause they already have, couldn’t they put a similar stipulation for the winners of the tournney still?

This would definitely make this more like team sports like Hockey, basketball etc

by yellopanda on Dec 7, 2011 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

I’d like that. Yah they are the tournament champ, thats cool. They won the tournament. Now put them in the next one! I suppose if a champ got injured he can just fight the winner of the next tourny. Or if its the 145 division that always has a tourny going.

That would actually be best to me. Have a three month tournament, and follow it up with another right after. That way your winner (who fought 3 times in 3 months) gets 6 months between his next fight (who will be the winner of the next tournament that started immediately, so that winner gets 3 months off after their 3 fights in 3 months tourney) But I don’t really know how realistic that is…

P.S.

Fujii winning woulda been much better for the promotion, this is very true. She’s easily promotable and has that best p4p undefeated for a loooooooong time aura established. It would take Zoila years of winning under the Bellator umbrella to get the mystique Fujii had going into that tourney.

That fight is a perfect example when people say Bellator manipulates their judging.

i loved the decision by the judges on the megumi/frausto fight. i had 100 dollars on her at a +375 moneyline.

megumi was the one with the bad gameplan plus you know one judge wanted to give megumi her first taste of defeat.

Public Enemy #1 and enjoying every minute of it. Tapology. Peace.

not when it comes to a asian fighting in the states the track record.

be it male or female the hose is on. yet when we go over we get treated fair. the u.s.a chants are pure bullshit. you know what i don’t even think americans do it to be mean. it’s just being lazy it’s easy to say u.s.a. than a fighters name.

by BIGNAT on Dec 10, 2011 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

haha lazy Americans

I think a lot of it is judging criteria, whereas fighters that have grown up fighting in the states are aware of the ridiculously high priority to octagon control in American judging. Over in Asia, it doesn’t matter fi you are on bottom or backed up in a corner- if you do more damage then you win the round. If a guy is on top of you laying and praying and you get a few close subs you win the round. Not so much here.
