You Mad? - A Recap of this Week’s Beefs, Twitter Beefs, Squabbles, Rants, Wars of Words and Other Assorted Drama in MMA

Dan-henderson1_medium

There was a lot going on this past week! I thought fight weeks were supposed to be less dramatic but apparently not everyone got that memo. That UFC 140 event was vicious so maybe everyone will calm down and appreciate the good things in their lives and not be worried about petty drama for one week. Yeah, I don't think it will happen, either, but it's worth a suggestion. Here is what everyone was all worked up about this past week.

Dan Henderson and Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva: Everyone pretty much knows that Anderson Silva has a shoulder injury which is keeping him from a potential rematch with Chael Sonnen anytime soon. Dan Henderson has also expressed his desire to get a title shot against Silva after he won a hard-fought battle against Maurico Rua at UFC 139. But, with Silva out with an injury, it seemed like both of these would have to wait.

They might have to wait even longer after Michael Bisping earned a big victory over Jason Miller at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale. With his win, people were starting to mention Bisping's name as a possible challenger for Silva's championship belt. When Dan Henderson was asked about deserving the next shot against Silva on Twitter, he replied:

All the "injuries" that keep Anderson from a rematch w/ me or Chael will heal real fast if they offer Bisping to him.

Oh, snap! I can't believe he doesn't think Silva really has a shoulder injury. You know who else doesn't believe it? Chael Sonnen. During the press conference for UFC on Fox 2, Chael was asked about it and replied (transcription by Bloody Elbow):

"I don't believe Anderson's hurt. I know he says he's hurt and then he was in training camp with Wanderlei that got caught on tape. He just got done working with Machida that got caught on tape. I really don't care about Anderson Silva. I truly don't. How hard is it gonna be to become world champion beating up math teachers? I don't understand it. Give Anderson Silva my schedule and see how well he does. Yeah, I think he's ducking me. I think he's ducking Dan Henderson. I don't know if he'd be eager to fight Bisping, you'll have to Dan about that comment but no, I don't think he's hurt."

Wow, what a bunch of haters. In any case, Sonnen already has another fight lined up for UFC on Fox 2 in January where he'll be facing Mark Munoz. There is no word yet on who Hendo will fight next but he's not expecting it to be Anderson Silva.

Status: If Bisping gets a fight against Silva, I probably won't like it except that I think Bisping would get demolished. But, I still want the Sonnen vs. Silva rematch first.

Star-divide

Miesha Tate vs. Ronda Rousey: After all the back and forth tweeting and public discussion between Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey over the past weeks about whether or not Rousey deserves a shot at Tate's title, whether Rousey is disrespectful and who is prettier, we forgot to ask Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker what he thought about the whole thing. Well, not everyone forgot: someone did ask him about it on the Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal conference call on Tuesday. It seems Coker kind of agrees with Rousey (transcription by MMA Nation)

"When you look at an MMA fighter, you have to look at the total package and the level of experience," Coker said during Tuesday's Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal conference call. "The combat skill that Ronda has is far greater than a beginning fighter that's only had two or three fights. She still is young in her career, but with that Olympic experience and all those matches in judo, it makes her very credible, very quickly.

"To me, I would have no problem putting that fight together because of the all past experiences she's had."

But, wait, he didn't talk about who's prettiest! Fortunately someone asked him about that, too. He was not asked who's prettiest but he was asked about the importance of looks and sex appeal as it relates to Rousey. Coker replied:

"We would never want to put a fighter in there that's overmatched because that's not good for anybody," Coker explained. "So when you talk about Ronda, talk about somebody that's deserving and that has the skill to be there, even though the MMA record in cage fights might be limited."

Good answer.

Status: No announcement of a fight for either Rousey or Tate has been announced. Sarah Kaufman is now officially signed into another contract with Strikeforce so I would imagine she's "in the mix", too, and would like her shot at Tate. I guess we'll have to see what happens but at least Strikeforce is still alive and doing well with its new Showtime deal.

Georges St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz and Cesar Gracie: Remember how Georges St. Pierre got all fired up when Nick Diaz called him out after beating B.J. Penn ay UFC 137? I do. GSP was so fired up that he asked Dana White to let him fight Nick Diaz at his next fight instead of Carlos Condit, who he was supposed to be fighting, and Dana obliged. After the event, GSP also discussed how disrespectful Nick Diaz was and that he looked forward to giving him a beatdown.

GSP seems to have lightened up a little and is now talking about Diaz in more reasonable terms. At a Rushfit event last weekend, the Montreal Gazette reports that he said this:

"I truly believe (Diaz) deserves the fight. He's a fight that I want and a fight that everybody wants to see. Let's do it."

St. Pierre also said that Diaz calling him really didn't bother him and that he faces every challenge the same way. Trash talk like that does not get into his head.

Unfortunately, we now know that St. Pierre will be sidelined with a torn ACL for 10 months and will now miss his title defense against Nick Diaz. Diaz will instead face Carlos Condit at UFC 143, where the two will vie for an interim welterweight championship. Naturally, Camp Diaz had something to say about this and, naturally, it was Cesar Gracie doing the talking.

Gracie spoke to Middle Easy (and MMA Mania transcribed it). First of all, Gracie says they are disappointed:

"It's disappointing, it's the fight we have been trying to get for the last two years you know, Nick vs. GSP. Now that Nick is in the UFC we figured that for sure it would happen and the last two times you know, this time and last time, GSP keeps getting injured and events keep happening and it's kind of a weird thing so, you know were disappointed by it but we have to turn the page and we have a different fight on our hands."

However, Gracie also thinks it's a better matchup and that Condit's stand-up is better than GSP's:

"I think he has better stand up actually than Georges. He kicks better, he throws better punches, he is taller. From a fans perspective, and I am a fan myself, it's actually a more intriguing matchup, and I think it's a more exciting match up because we're going to see some people throwing down in this one. In the GSP fight, I don't think we were going to have any of that to be honest with you despite what GSP said about being better everywhere than Nick. I don't think he was going to stand with Nick for very long. I don't think Condit is going to be shooting for takedowns as much as GSP would have. I really think this is going to be a rock em' sock em' fight."

Finally, Gracie thinks that Diaz's fight against Condit should not just be for an interim title but that GSP should have to vacate his welterweight title:

"They are making this an interim fight and I think it should be the championship fight because since the Jake Shields fight, by the time GSP fights again it's going to be about two years. A champion being out for a couple years, my idea is that they should actually strip him. I know these things happen and I am sure it's not his fault but, it's kind of like, Nick deserves a championship fight, and with it being an interim title there is always going to be people saying you're not the real champion. "

Oh, Cesar. You just don't like Little Star Guy.

Status: UFC 143 will now feature Diaz vs. Condit and Mike Pierce vs. Josh Koscheck in the welterweight division. GSP says he wants to return stronger than ever after he recovers from his injury. Best wishes, Georges!

Urijah Faber. Vs. Dominick Cruz: These guys don't really like each other, which makes it just fantastic that they've just been named as coaches in the next season of The Ultimate Fighter. Upon the announcement that they would be coaches, they both quickly got on Twitter to tweet some smack.

Cruz: "Pumped and honored 2 b in this position, big thnx 2 all my supporters/fans much love!"

Faber: "Pumped on TUF coachn job 1 time offer 4 @thedomin8r 2 give up now & b our water boy #chance4victory @PhilMrWonderful r cook

Cruz: "Na @UrijahFaber but after I beat u again u can have a job doin up @PhilMrWonderful cornrows!"

Faber: "Master Thong is gonna b the Hidden Jewel of TUF15"

They're so cute. Nice work on starting to promote TUF now, too.

Status: It's nice to have something to look forward to and I will certainly be looking forward to the next season of TUF.

Miscellaneous Trash Talk:

Hendo also announced his divorce. I thought for sure it would make headlines but no one cares.

Although I spend countless hours researching, it has taken a ‘Cali Cock-Slap’ for me to come to the realization that Frank Mir is a top HW. If not for Cali ringing my bell, I might also never have never realized that Randy Couture is MMA’s greatest achievement. Having had this sense finally rammed into me, I can now move forward and strive to breakout of my eternal bridesmaid rut.

I'm starting to believe Miesha is doubting he sexiness.

First she goes after Rousey a little, then Kaufman and no after Lil bulldog. I know she has a boyfriend but when she watches a female MMA fight it seems she notices other things besides the fight. For us guys we notice those things but Miesha should just watch and not be a nitpicker when it comes to outfits on female MMA fighters. The tighter the better.

Welcome my son, Welcome to Machine. The Electric Eye is watching.
