The Stag Party: The Current State of MMA in Asia

Photo

MMA in Asia- it happens. I know that the blogosphere stateside enjoys a good ole fashioned Chicken Little stance on things, however, as much as the media fights it- Mixed Martial Arts in Asia is far from dead. In fact, Asian MMA is in a ridiculous moment of Weeee!

Two huge press conferences went down in the East on Monday, and if the news hasn’t drifted Westerly to you we are here to break it down! Enter Gal’s Guide to MMA’s second male chromosone - Mountaineers101. Prepare yourself for a Stag Party as we bring you the digs and what it means for this wonderful sport we love so much!

Midge: So we have some big news coming out of the East this week, my friend. Where do we even begin?

Mountaineer: Well, we could always talk about ONE FC becoming the equivalent to sliced bread in Asia when it comes to MMA. What we have here is an alliance of epic proportions from camps and promotions joining forces to make ONE FC one of, if not THE elite promotion in Asian MMA.

Midge: Too true. As Monday’s edition of Japan’s post-Pride MMA lovechild, DREAM, we have a total of 38 organizations within the network! We have the big boys of each country. DREAM from Japan. URCC from the Philippines. CRC from Australia. Road FC from Korea. And many more! All of these promotions are working together to create champions to send to the big show. All roads lead to ONE FC.

Mountaineer: Not to mention some spectacular regional promotions and monster camps. You have camps such as Lakay Wushu out of the Philippines, sporting some absolutely scary prospects in Eduard Folayang and Kevin Belingon. Then, you have the famous Phuket Top Team of Thailand. You can catch any fighter coming in and out of there to sharpen their knees and elbows, like Mike Swick and Roger Huerta. And finally, the emerging juggernaut of Evolve MMA in Singapore. Muay Thai champs like Yoddecha Sityodtong and grappling gods like Shinya Aoki and Rafael dos Anjos? This looks to be the beginning of something spectacular.

Midge: The only thing that could make the ONE Asia Network Partnership any more epic would be Pride rules. Oh wait, ONE FC rolls with soccer kicks and head stomps! I said it in 2002 and I’ll say it in 2012. Pride Never Dies! With a reach of over one billion households across Asia (with more broadcast deals to come), the essence of what Asian MMA is alive and well.

Mountaineer: Not to mention the chance of revitalizing a dying (or perhaps it was on life support) promotion in DREAM. The exposure to all of the stars in Asia under this umbrella could provide the perfect CPR that DREAM and Japanese MMA needs. You can take your PUJI money and we’ll take our Shinya Aokis and Eduard Folayangs, thank you very much.

Midge: Very true. This partnership is like an adrenaline needle to the heart of a junkie. It is a perfect immediate influx of resources that DREAM was looking for. Plus, the Network has created a feeder system for fighters which Asia has never had. Each promotion in the network will be bringing fighters along within their organization in order to crown a champion, who will inevitably move up to ONE FC to face a champion of another organization! I love the "Champion vs. Champion" marketing, but I love what this does for the fighters as well. In America we have amateur events, then regional events,

Dream_one_fc_large_medium

and then the big show. It gives fighters a chance to develop before being thrown into the shark tank of the UFC. Asian fighters have never really had that opportunity to gradually raise their level of competition. This partnership creates an atmosphere where fighters coming out of Asia in the next ten years will have every opportunity their Western counterparts already have. And just in time, as Zuffa begins their assault on the East.

Mountaineer: Who would’ve thought that the UFC would be on Fox a few years ago? Now, look at this! Global domination? Perhaps. MMA has been a dying thing in Japan, but the UFC seems to be putting on a pretty good appetizer of things to come in Japan. Granted, I would’ve booked more PRIDE veterans, but in terms of putting on competitive matchups with a good enough marketability angle, this looks like a very good card, no matter what side of the Pacific you are on.

Midge: At first their announcement that this card would be a feeder into a PPV in America, and that the event would start in the morning in Japan worried me. Japan is a hostile environment for foreign companies. This is a place where XBox 360s were taken off the shelves because they didn’t sell, and Google can’t get people to use their search engine. To walk into the Japanese market half-heartedly would be stupid at best.

Mountaineer: Something that still worries me is the main event. Hardcores are chomping at the bit to see Edgar versus Bendo. It is an absolute barnburner and could take FOTY. Frankie Edgar has a thing about setting those kind of precedents early in the year. What Frankie Edgar also has a habit of doing is not selling pay-per-views. He also fights in a division where casuals kind of turn their heads and act like they are watching a Nik Lentz-Andre Winner trilogy. Hardcores get it, casuals don’t. And Ben Henderson is relegated to a Facebook prelim in his last fight. Will Zuffa be able to sell with the rest of their card or is their brand name sufficient enough in Japan to make people watch? Let us hope it is the former.

Midge: I do like how Zuffa has included Japanese fighters in seven of the twelve fights, although that’s a no brainer. Pride stars like Rampage and Mark Hunt on the main card will certainly draw some eyes. It’s a tough balance between bringing in the Japanese market in order to expand for the future, and worrying about the immediate bottom line (PPV buys in the West). Edgar vs. Henderson and Pettis vs. Lauzon are definitely not there to bring in the Japanese crowd. I personally am dying to see these matches, but they certainly wouldn’t bring in the eyes of the natives like Shogun vs. Henderson would have. I think putting a Japanese champion like Hatsu Hioki on the undercard may be seen as disrespectful as well. But really, the most alarming aspect of this show is that it will occur in the morning in Tokyo. Starting a show at 10:00am is not a good idea. Especially in a country that is going to take offense to it.

Mountaineer: These are very good observations. Also, a couple other weird little things I just picked up on. It looks like the entire undercard is geared towards the hardcore MMA fan here in America and the Japanese. When you move up to the main card, you start seeing more American fighters, albeit you have Sexyama and PRIDE stars in Rampage and Mark Hunt. Another question you would want to wonder is if the theatrics of the show will be enough to draw some fans that are flip-flopping to go. When I think JMMA, I think Sakuraba walking out in a Super Mario outfit or a luchador mask. I think pyrotechnics out the wazoo. Sure, these things are secondary, but you want to make a big presence in this market. Finally, Saitama is a HUGE place. The UFC will want to pack the place. Do you think they have the ability to draw a sellout, or will they end up putting up tarp over half the seats like a Jacksonville Jaguar game?

Midge: Oh they are definitely going to have to Jag it up. This card will be amazing, and the hardcore fans in Japan will attend. But Saitama Super Arena easily holds 40,000 people. Pride has crammed over 70,000 people in that thing! Even if loosely put together, the stadium will have 30,000+ seats available. UFC 139 at the HP Pavillion in San Jose has a 17,000 seat capacity.

Mountaineer: Packing 55,724 rabid Canadians into the Rogers Centre in Toronto is one thing. Trying to fill close to that with a Japanese crowd that has seemingly become apathetic towards the sport since the controversy brought about by the collapse of PRIDE will be a different story. Perhaps DREAM’s New Year’s Eve card will give us a sign of where MMA stands in the country.

Midge: This is true. Once upon a time, Pride events would garner a majority viewership on broadcast television. Now, DREAM is having trouble just keeping it’s product on Japanese television period. The people aren’t watching like they used to. However, those same people are still consumers in Japan, and Zuffa could tap into a huge market if they could reawaken that Bushido cultural interest. But holding your return show at 10:00am is definitely not how you do it. That’s how you offend a prideful people.

Mountaineer: Not to mention the toll taken on the economy by the earthquake and subsequent nuclear disaster. Granted, ticket prices range from $1,287 (100,000 in Japanese Yen) to a relatively cheap $74 (5,800 Yen). After the disaster they had at UFC 102, it is good to see they learned a bit of a lesson and dropped their prices when breaking into a new market with a poor economy.

Midge: I think the real thing that is going to stop the UFC from true growth and success in Japan is their lack of understanding of the culture. Latin and European consumers love them some Westernized junk. You can throw them the same product you sold in America and do great. The Japanese don’t play with this. If you don’t tailor your product to their liking, they won’t buy it. Coming in with a product that looks the same as it’s English counterpart is a huge obstacle. Companies like Google, Apple, and Microsoft have struggled to pull this off. I don’t have any reason to think that Zuffa will be any different. The UFC has the ability to break this market, they just need to go about it differently than the markets they have already broken into.

Mountaineer: With all this analysis, the Japanese MMA scene looks to be in such a bleak place. Hopefully the UFC can do something about this. Also, we do have another card to look forward to in Japan. Antonio Inoki is coordinating an event with Dream on New Year’s Eve. It looks to be a fun little event, with your Bantamweight Grand Prix finals and rumored bouts with Fedor, Tim Sylvia, Brett Rogers, and a slew of others. Combined with some K-1 and puroresu (Japanese pro wrestling, for all of you people with social lives) provided by IGF, this is a surefire card to get some Japanese fans excited. Needless to say, great month ahead of us and 2012 looks to be even better. Any final thoughts?

Midge: So kind to give me the last words. I like words. And lasts. Sure, the Japanese MMA scene isn’t what it used to be, but the glory days weren’t that long ago. The core audience is still around, they just haven’t been tapped into successfully since the Pride scandles. With Zuffa pounding into the market and DREAM connecting with the ONE FC network, 2012 has the potential to be a huge year of resurgence for the sport in Japan. Either way, we are in the midst of huge growth across Asia in general. Mixed Martial Arts has been growing world wide for some time, but 2012 seems to be the year it EXPLODES. I’m giddy like a school girl.

The bottom line is Georges is being a little bitch. He didn’t step up and say anything when the UFC pulled me out of this fight. I understand sometimes you have to do what you’re told, but why wouldn’t you tell the media you still want to fight me? If I was Georges, I would want to fight the best. I would have asked for the Anderson Silva fight. I would have asked to fight the Strikeforce champ. I don't see why

the UFC won’t throw some fighters into the main event that catered to Japanese fans, air it at a reasonable time in Japan, and rebroadcast it later in America for free. That way it still will draw the causal American fan. Not being able to get PPVs on it would suck but they are projecting lower numbers anyways. There. I just solved all the worlds problems. You’re welcome Zuffa.

Good read.

Here’s how Asian MMA is Before:

JAPAN!!!!!!!! — ….. (a few good promotions, but nothing big)

How Asian MMA is now:

Japan – REST OF ASIA

and I think it’s great. Not just ONE FC and DREAM though… there’s a ton of good promotions now all of Asia, Legend FC, URCC in Philippines, RUFF in China, PRO in Taiwan, Dare in Thailand, etc etc etc. It’s an exciting time for Asian MMA in the region. :)

I LOVE IT

I love the idea of all these promotions working as a well oiled machine. It’s just so much smarter than the ultra competitive kill your competition mentality in America. Especially with a market that encompasses so many different cultures. It’s hard to imagine one entity such as the UFC building the sport and taking over the entire side of the globe as the single most sought after place to fight. But when you have all these promotions growing the sport in their own culture- The URCC is going to market MMA better in the Phillipines than the American based UFC. Dare is going to market MMA in Thailand better than the American based UFC. etc. These native promotions have been, and still are, by far the most successful entity in getting the sport to the people.

Now that each promotion can work together and have their champions fight eachother, you get all of these different countries MMA scenes, medias, and fans linked together and into one big Asian market. BLAM! You have your #1 promotion. Victor Cui is basically a fuckin genius. We’ve watched the Fertittas and DW grab the west over the past decade, and I always figured they’d eventually over a long period of time expand into the Asian market. But ONE FC coming up and establishing themselves in the market- and early enough that they can brand themselves as the #1 destination for MMA in the world to their market before the UFC does. If they do that, they can keep Zuffa from ever getting a foothold. Genius.

I foresee in five years, when we are in the second generation of fighters to come up through this network, we will have the old Pride vs. UFC wars of yore x20. I love it.

But he sits there like a robot and doesn’t say anything at all, just like he’s not going to say anything about me calling him a bitch now. If I saw BJ Penn walking down the street and called him a bitch, we would be fighting right there on the spot. — Nick Diaz

I shall make note of that. Thank you, our mighty Asian MMA overlord. Your stuff on BE is seriously the balls. Makes for a great late night read.

thanks.

…on Evolve though, what’s great about it, is that Aoki isn’t even the best grappler they have.

He routinely gets worked in training by guys better than him. Guys like BJJ world champion, Zorobabel Moreira (who is also one of the top prospects in Asia) and other dudes work with him every single day, so he’s not only improving his striking from the Muay Thai legends that they have, he’s also sharpening his ground work.

Funny tidbit as well: After working with Evolve, Aoki has even mentioned that he now prefers a cage more than the ring.

I’m sure this is the last thing Eddie Alvarez’s ligaments want to hear.

I LOVE it

When I heard Aoki went to Evolve at first, I was stoked. That place always seems to get more and more talent in there.

It’s scary that Aoki is grappling with guys like Moreira on a daily basis. I always had the feeling that back home he was the top dog.

Also, I believe I saw that Roger is training there? Just on a seminar basis or visit?

Probably just a visit.

It’s a Renzo Gracie affiliated gym, so they sometimes fly over people like Renzo, Kyra, etc, to do seminars and to train with their fight team.
