Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey Talk Things Out (Sort Of)

Miesha_tate_r2fgqaojtrjm_medium

On Monday, Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey were guests on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani at exactly the same time. Oooh...drama. There actually was not that much real DRAMA but there was a lot of discussion about the differences in opinion the two have had ever since Rousey called out Tate and Sarah Kaufman after her win at Strikeforce Challengers 20. It was a tense discussion but I actually thought both fighters presented their arguments pretty well.

Their segment started with Miesha Tate on her own and then she was joined by Rousey. Tate expressed her concern that Rousey is inexperienced and untested, and that no one knows what she'll do when she faces a stronger challenge than she's faced so far:

"What happens when she gets a failed arm bar and someone ends up on top pounding her face in?" she said. "Is she going to tap out or quit? We don't know. We haven't seen that yet. I think it's kind of silly to put her in with me because that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to take it to her. A lot of people are underestimating me. That's fine. That always seems to be the case. Make no mistake, if Ronda is my next fight, I'm going to come in with a vengeance you've never seen before, because to be quite honest, it's probably going to piss me off."

A major item of contention in this whole ordeal is that Tate doesn't feel that Rousey should deserve a title shot at 135 pounds before Sarah Kaufman gets her title shot. Tate said that it would be more appropriate for Rousey to fight Alexis Davis and preserve the Tate-Kaufman matchup. But Rousey has a different view on this:

"I really feel 100 percent that a fight between her [Tate] and me needs to happen," Rousey said. "It'll be great for women's MMA. It'll be the first highly anticipated fight in women's MMA for a long time ... We need to capitalize on the opportunity while we still have it. I don't want to risk her losing the title and us not being able to fight each other for the title."

Tate has also taken issue with the way Rousey has called out other fighters in her quest for her next fight. Tate has repeatedly expressed that Rousey has not been respectful toward the other fighters in the 135 pound division or to her, the champ. Rousey, however, pointed out that her approach is working to get attention for her and for the potential fight with Tate. Tate responded:

"I think it's working because she's pretty," Tate said. "If you weren't pretty, it wouldn't matter what you said or didn't say. That's why you're getting this attention. I don't know, I guess I personally like more of a humble approach. You can say you want to be the Chael Sonnen of women's MMA, and Chael gets a lot of press and everything like that, too, but no one likes him."

This was interesting because up until that point, "pretty" had not yet been mentioned. Rousey then pointed out:

"Yeah, but he makes a lot of money and he gets a lot of title shots, too, doesn't he?"

When the two did get to talking about their own potential matchup, Tate brought up Rousey's lack of experience and also her hype going into the fight:

"What happens if I go out there and I just cream you?" Tate asked. "Then all your hype is just over. Then Ronda was just another pretty face."

Rousey replied,

"That's a risk I'm wiling to take, and you should be willing to take some risks, too."

Tate said she is willing.

The interview continued with discussions about where Sarah Kaufman fits into all of this and how a fight between Tate and Kaufman would appeal to fans. Rousey also told Tate that if she wants to be idealistic about these matchups and not seize the opportunities to make money, she should go to the Olympics, where you won't make any money.

The fighters both agreed that they would abide by whatever Strikeforce matchmaker Sean Shelby decides for them. And, when Kaufman finally appeared after Tate and Rousey she, awesomely, talked about beating people's faces in.

Awesome recap!

I didn’t have a chance to check this out yesterday so this is really great!

And I agree with Miesha.

I actually agree more with Ronda!

It’s annoying how much Miesha brings up the “pretty” thing. No one else is bringing it up now but her. I also think Ronda is wise to not just sit around and wait for a matchup. She’s got some hype right now and I think she needs to make the most of it while it lasts. Opportunities are rare and they certainly don’t last forever so she needs to get on it!

I don't necessarily agree with the pretty thing - I could care less how a fighter looks.

But I do think Ronda needs a decent fight at 135 before getting her shot. Ronda vs. Davis makes the most sense, while I think we need to see Tate vs. Kaufman for the title. I certainly can’t blame Ronda for pushing for her shot – why wouldn’t she want a title shot? But logically, I think she needs to wait a little while.

Of course, in a perfect world

Julie Kedzie would fight for the title every single time. Julie is the best.

Unfortunately, looking at your own rankings, no one knows an Alexis Davis or cares about Sarah Kaufman or Julie Kedzie. Granted, they look to be awesome fighters and Kaufman has already alienated some fans with the five round decision she took as champion on a Challengers show (I believe.)

This is when Strikeforce needs to strike while the iron is hot. Is Chael ready for Anderson again after one fight? Did he earn his shot? Some would say no, but the intrigue is there. I would have to say the same with Ronda and Miesha.

Also, Miesha kind of pisses me off with the way she is skirting these questions and kind of backs down when Ronda makes pretty clear points.

I only say Julie Kedzie deserves a shot because she is fun. She and I spent maybe 30 minutes on Twitter discussing how she actually has boy parts and is going to defeat Cruz, Faber, and Aldo at the same time. With her bonus money, she will open a cat sanctuary.

Also, I am connected to her via 2-3 degrees in real life, so I cheer for both of the Kedzie girls!

And I totally see where you're coming from

I would not at all be mad if they made Rousey vs. Tate, though I personally feel like it’s a bit early. The three fights that make the most sense just based on wins and losses are Tate vs. Kaufman, Davis vs. Rousey, and Carmouche vs. Kedzie.

Of course, this will all be moot when Holly Holm comes into Strikeforce and knocks fools out left and right.

I think Ronda needs to keep her pants on and wait her turn.

And Miesha Tate bringing up the pretty thing is kind of redonk. I mean, she’s Miesha Tate. Once you’ve had pictures taken of yourself in a bikini and heels, you lose the right to judge someone for using their looks.

Or her with her jeans around her knees in a thong. Just saying. That doubles the redonk.

Yeah. I mean, it is her business if she wants that out there and I am definitely not complaining, but if she wants to take this whole route of trying not to “degrade” WMMA…probably not the best thing to have out there.

I think Miesha is talking in a different context.

She sort of wants to keep the “competitive purity” of the sport, but is ready to go full redonk to heighten her own personal image to get more sponsorships and the like.

I think, in her mind, she’s carefully separated the two aspects of her competitive image and her glamourized image; but in Ronda’s they are one and the same.

Also, redonk. Never written that word so much in one place before…

UFC?

Ronda makes a good point that MMA organisations don’t make title shots based on merit, but marketability. It is a bit silly to come right out and say “I should fight for the title because I’m pretty”, it really undermines WMMA.

Also, it’s a little bit annoying that she keeps calling either MMA or Strikeforce the UFC.

Kinda depressing to see Ronda having come out feeling somewhat bitter of her olympic experience.

But, hey, she was one of the best at judo in the whole wide world and it got her peanuts. Hard to argue with her logic of wanting get paid quick.

She was working two jobs last year on Thanksgiving weekend.

Judo does not make you money. With the sponsorships she gets, she can become financially secure and independent doing something she loves.

I think both Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey agree in part

They agree that it’s a combination of talent and marketability that are critical to keeping WMMA viable for MMA fans. I just think they have different ideas about where the balance is centered.

If WMMA wasn’t in at least some degree of peril right now in the major leagues, I think I’d be siding 100% with Miesha Tate. Rousey could fight Alexis Davis, winner of that getting the winner of Tate vs. Kaufmann. Kaufmann has definitely earned it. What’s more, Rousey will be a bigger name once she’s fought on a main card or two and continues to generate exposure. She and an opponent could get interviewed at a UFC event in cross promotioning, and maybe they could get her on talk shows. I’d just rather she breach the mainstream a bit before getting a world title shot in another division with an already established challenger, but there may or may not be time.

by Chromium on Nov 30, 2011 7:10 AM EST reply actions

Um, I feel like this might be a derail but I somehow wrote all this up it doesn’t seem like it would be really all that hard to book a women’s division with the talent available, or expand downward either.

In addition to the Cyborg vs. Yamanaka and Tate/Rousey/Kaufmann/Davis, it seems obvious to book Carmouche vs. Nunes. In addition I’d do Kedzie vs. Baszler, and hire a couple of W145 fighters that could set up a title eliminator so the W145 Champion doesn’t stay potentially inactive between Cyborg’s fight in December and whenever Rousey wins her two fights at W135 (if she does). If Yana Kunitskaya is available without M-1 attached, use her. Other possibilities are Milena Dudieva, Cindy Dandois (although only against Kunitskaya), Edianne Gomes, and I suppose Romy Ruyssen. Hire as many of those names as possible to generate a viable division here (again though, only hire Dandois if you can get Kunitskaya without M-1 attached, since Dandois does have an outside shot of being a world champion in SF and her one loss is a quick stoppage by Kunitskaya). If Shana Nelson (formerly Shana Olsen) is still under contract, have her fight Sarah D’Alelio. Winner keeps their job. If Shana is gone, make D’Alelio vs. Julia Budd since Budd needs a rebound match. I wouldn’t outright fire Shana but I also wouldn’t rehire her right now unless she gets a win or two on the indies. If Kerry Vera is somehow still under contract, Germaine de Randamie could use a squash match (no offense to Vera). If Vera does put on a good showing even she loses, keep her. If she gets annihilated, cut her. Try and hire Lauren Taylor and Ashley Sanchez to shore up W145 a bit longer term. Try and get back Gina Carano if possible, but the existence of the division should not depend on her.

Send feelers to Marloes Coenen about when she would be available to negotiate. Ditto Sara McMann. Attempt to hire Holly Holm, Rin Nakai, Bethany Marshall, and Tonya Evinger, Vanessa Porto, Valerie Letourneau to augment the W135 division.

Establish a W125 division with a 8-woman Grand Prix including 4 alternates. Re-hire Hitomi Akano and Carina Damm, and try to hire (in no particular order) Tara Larosa, Cat Zingano, Angela Magana, Maiju Kujala, Sheila Gaff, and Barb Honchak for the main field. For the alternate bracket hire Aisling Daly (she’s overqualified for the alternate bracket but I’d rather not put her in the main field since she did lose in the first round of the Bellator tournament), Sally Krumdiack, Hanna Sillen, and Reyna Cordoba in the alternate bracket. Also try to hire Heather Clark, Marianna Kheyfets, Michelle Ould, Katja Kankaanpaa, Karla Benitez, and Sofie Bagherdai.

Should Megumi Fujii, Jessica Aguilar, Rosi Sexton, or Zoila Frausto Gurgel ever become available snatch them up immediately for W125.

There, you have two fully viable divisions in W125 and W135, and W145 is at least strong enough to survive the next year-and-a-half or so, by which point maybe more people will become available at that weight (Randi Miller and Tay Stratford I suppose are possibilities once they actually start their pro careers). Even if some people turn you down you still have enough women to build three divisions around (or rather two divisions and a miniature division).

Easy as cake (although you have no idea how much legwork I had to do to find all those fucking names, find pictures, and evaluate their records and level of competition; I was thinking about doing a fanpost but good lord even if I just did W125 instead of everything I don’t want to have to do 18 biographies; and before anyone says Roxanne Modaferri she’s on a 4-fight losing streak so she’s not an option right now).
