You Mad? - A Recap of this Week’s Beefs, Twitter Beefs, Squabbles, Rants, Wars of Words and Other Assorted Drama in MMA

155528400-10173725_medium

Last week was a quiet week. This week, everybody's mad! Thank goodness because I was running out of stuff to write about. I'm quite pleased to report that we have some new faces featured in "You Mad?" this week and I would like to extend a warm welcome to them. Please come back to visit anytime. (Note that I have not dubbed anyone as "The Face of 'You Mad?'"). Without further ado, this is what everyone was getting upset about.

Ronda Rousey vs. All the Other Women: After Ronda Rousey's impressive win over Julia Budd at Strikeforce Challengers 20 Friday night, she announced that she'd like to move down to 135 pounds and take on Sarah Kaufman and then Miesha Tate. The crowd seemed to enjoy it well enough but I don't think many of the other female Strikeforce fighters liked it one bit. Here is a sampling of what they had to say on Twitter:

Miesha Tate:

she had another great performance, but if she wants to come after me it'll be a diff story

@RondaRousey had another great performance props to her & mad respect for @juliabudd she's super tough, looking 4ward 2 Ronda's drop 2 135

Im tired of ever1 searching 4 the "face of WMMA" it's a bunch of BS we are all faces of WMMA, men's MMA doesn't need it & we don't either

ya she can have her title shot if she does her road work she's gotta make 135 1st

ya for sure, if she wins 2 fights at 135 against top 10 ranked girls then she might have earned herself a shot

Tara LaRosa:

Tara LaRosa: So @criscyborg signs a 4 fight deal with Strikeforce... and suddenly @RondaRousey wants to drop to 135. Coincidence? #notsomuch

Tara LaRosa: Yeah, and she just basically said she'd armbar me. Apparently, she doesn't know much about me.

Ronda Rousey: if you such a big problem with me just move up to 135 so I can solve it for you.

Tara LaRosa: Apparently you missed the first 7 years of my MMA career.

Tara LaRosa: oh btw... Congrats on the win.

Ronda Rousey: that was a quick change of tune

Tara LaRosa: meh... Not really, I still think you're a disrespectful newb.

Tara LaRosa: *shrug* You might be a decent fighter, no one REALLY knows yet...but that doesn't mean I'm gonna pretend to like you.

Alexis Davis:

Get in line

She got to earn it 1st, u have to work ur way up!

Shayna Baszler and Cristiane Cyborg:

Shayna Baszler: Move down to 135? Bring it on Rowdy......

Cris Cyborg: Shana kick ass her!

Sarah Kaufman:

Once I beat miesha if SF wants to put in ronda I'm in :)

it's about earning the right to titles

Rosi Sexton:

All credit to @RondaRousey on her wins at 145, but that shouldn't be a shortcut to the top of the most stacked division in #wmma

Liz Carmouche:

congrats on your fight amazing transitions!

Ronda Rousey:

It's official, twitter is way more entertaining than Facebook

I concur - Twitter is where it's at. And, Rousey really stirred up some trouble with this one. They all may have a point about her needing to earn a title shot and not just get one handed to her but I think Rousey's surge in popularity plus her post-fight call-outs might get her the fights she wants. There doesn't need to be a "face of women's MMA" (I don't like that concept, either) but she is a fighter that people are starting to recognize and I think she's wise to take advantage of that while it lasts.

Status: I'm pretty sure this all just made me like Ronda Rousey more.

More drama and miscellaneous trash talk after the jump!

Star-divide

Bob Arum vs. MMA: Last Saturday night, the UFC on Fox 1 broadcast aired live on TV (network television) as did the highly anticipated boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez (pay-per-view). Although the events were on the same night, the UFC event finished before the Macquiao-Marquez fight began in order to avoid a conflict, which would have been disastrous for the UFC's ratings. And, everything seemed OK. The UFC event finished (quickly) and then many MMA fans switched over to watch boxing.

Boxing promoter Bob Arum is no fan of MMA. He's mentioned it a few times in the past. He's called MMA fans "young white guys that really don't follow boxing" when stating that MMA and boxing were not even competing for the same audience. Yet, after the two events last weekend, Arum seemed to be touting a triumph in the boxing vs. MMA contest for fans:

"They thought they would hurt us," Arum said of the UFC. "Instead they got hurt because they got buried. But I think the fact they're just on for an hour helps us."

Except that no one was really thinking UFC on Fox would hurt the viewership for the Pacquiao-Marquez fight. And, there is even a photo of Lorenzo Fertitta and Junior dos Santos with the boxing match on TV behind them so they certainly didn't seem to want to skip it. And, the UFC on Fox ratings were actually pretty good with an 8.8 million viewer peak during the event.  Can't boxing and MMA just get along?

Since they are not currently getting along, a few fighters had a few things to say about Bob Arum:

Urijah Faber:

Watchn Bob Arum intrvws, it baffles me how this old dude can b so lame. Get a clue buddy. Love boxing, but this guy needs an intervention.

Jason Miller:

Hey @BobArum if you even know what twitter is, how about you shut your pie hole.

Status: I'm not bothered by boxing and I can ignore Bob Arum. As long as I have my MMA to watch, I'll be happy.

Anderson Silva vs. Ed Soares: There's still trouble between these two. Remember that picture of Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva's manager, Ed Soares, where they appeared to be having fun and laughing it up? In case you don't, you can see it again right here. Well, Anderson Silva didn't care for that picture much. In fact, he discussed it with SB Nation:

"It's a problem," Silva told MMA Nation on Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway, where he was an honorary official for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. "It's a big problem. I don't like the picture, I don't like the position my manager (was in). Big problem. I don't like it."

But, Silva said this while standing right next to Soares, so that's kinda weird. In any case, Soares is still speaking about Anderson Silva's schedule and he says:

"There's no date, there's nothing set up. That's what (Sonnen) is saying he wants. But when Dana White decides and when the UFC decides...right now, there's nothing set."

Status: I'm sure they'll patch things up. Let's just schedule this fight already, OK?

Team Alpha Male vs. John Dodson: If you've been keeping up with the current season of The Ultimate Fighter (and you should be because it's really good!), you know John Dodson as the mole on Team Mayhem who was providing early notice of the matchup selections to the evil force that is Team Bisping.

Dodson has his own TUF blog over at Sherdog, where he discussed last week's episode. Last week featured a bantamweight semifinal fight between T.J. Dillashaw and Dustin Pague, and also showed some critique from other fighters who think that Dillashaw is asking for easy fights.  In Dodson's blog, he describes what a nice and kind guy Pague is and how he is always thinking of other people. When he got to describing Dillashaw, Dodson wrote:

So, on one side we have a guy that will go out of his way to help the world, and on the other side we have a guy that thinks he is the entire world and only cares about himself. The draft dodger T.J. was busy making sure that he gets his goal no matter what. He doesn't care about who he throws under the bus, he is just looking out for himself.

He continues to break down the fight, which Dillashaw won by unanimous decision:

The first round with Dustin and T.J. was both guys feeling each other out and seeing who was going to make the first move. T.J. got a takedown, and as usual, this was the story. He controlled Dustin on the ground and he couldn't get up. Dustin went after one submission after another but couldn't get the strength to get back to his feet.

In round two, Dustin let his hands go a little more, but it was basically the same thing as round one. T.J. got him down, kept control of Dustin. Round three, still the same story: Dustin got taken down again and T.J. just controlled him. He stayed active enough just to keep the ref from standing them up. Nothing really impressive about this win; it's a wrestler just doing what they always do, lay and pray.

Dodson then looks forward to the finale, which will feature Dillashaw against either Dodson or Johnny Bedford:

The draft dodger is the first bantamweight in the finale. Taking the easy road to the finale got him there.

Well, Dillashaw's fellow Team Alpha Male buddy, Urijah Faber, did not think highly of Dodson's blog. He disliked it so much that he took his concerns to Twitter:

Ha read @johndodsonmma's sherdog blog. If he thinks @TJDillashaw is scared of him he's smokin, Irritating lil turd. Insecure=Hater we will c

Apparently some folks thought this was a spoiler so Faber followed that up with:

I didn't spoil anything, Dodson is saying TJ is dodging him, im saying TJ is in the finals and isn't scared of any1 relax people.

Status: I guess we'll see what happens but I have to say, I'm kind of irritated with Dillashaw and his smug mug so I might side with Dodson here. But, I'll wait for this week's episode and just hope someone really brings a fight to Dillshaw in the finale.

Miscellaneous Trash Talk:

Jason Miller:

NBA isn't having a season because they aren't getting paid more than 50% of the profits boo hoo! #watchUFC

Derek Brunson:

I wonder how many NBA players are taking their Bentleys back to the car lot #nonba

Anderson Silva:

"I don't like this guy. This guy (wants to) fight me? Go to Brazil. No problem. ... Chael talks too much. I'm ready to fight Chael. But you have the chance - go to Brazil to fight me."

“Shana kick ass her!” is the single greatest Tweet of all time. We can close Twitter down right now, it’s all downhill from here.

I originally read it incorrectly as “Shana kick her ass!” and I loved the Tweet even then. Cyborg on Twitter is great, she’s generally very sweet and seems to often be in good spirits. I pictured it as a smiley endorsement of Shayna Baszler to kick Ronda’s ass and it was great. As a misspelled, smiley endorsement of Shayna Baszler to kick Ronda’s ass, it’s a billion times better.

i dont like cat pics

but I love this gif hahahahaha

The bottom line is Georges is being a little bitch. He didn’t step up and say anything when the UFC pulled me out of this fight. I understand sometimes you have to do what you’re told, but why wouldn’t you tell the media you still want to fight me? If I was Georges, I would want to fight the best. I would have asked for the Anderson Silva fight. I would have asked to fight the Strikeforce champ. But he sits there like a robot and doesn’t say anything at all, just like he’s not going to say anything about me calling him a bitch now. If I saw BJ Penn walking down the street and called him a bitch, we would be fighting right there on the spot. — Nick Diaz

I missed the part where TJ looked smug. Did he say anything in particular to make you feel that way?

And Dodson betraying his team is cool? nahh…

I don’t think Dodson betraying his team is cool but they got over it. Even Mayhem said they were cool now.

I think TJ looks smug. He has a smug-looking mug. He always looks like he’s smirking, IMO.
