You Mad? - A Recap of this Week’s Beefs, Twitter Beefs, Squabbles, Rants, Wars of Words and Other Assorted Drama in MMA

Welcome to another fight week featuring very little drama. These fight weeks are SO LAME. OK, I'm lying. Fight weeks are great! This was a pretty big fight week so, as was somewhat expected, everyone was behaving themselves for the most part. Well, almost everyone was behaving themselves (I'm looking at you, Forrest). Let's get to it!

Mark Munoz vs. Anderson Silva: After Mark Munoz beat Chris Leben at UFC 138 last weekend, he took the opportunity to say that he'd like a shot at the UFC middleweight title. Of course, if he were to get the title shot anytime very soon, it would be against Anderson Silva, who is a friend and training partner of Munoz. Apparently, Silva did not think Munoz's challenge to him was very nice.

In an interview with SporTV (and transcribed at Bloody Elbow), Silva said:

I hadn't even seen that (Munoz's challenge). I thought Munoz was a friend, but that's okay...

Uh oh. Trouble in paradise. But, who even knew these two were besties? Apparently, Mark Munoz did so, after learning that Silva was mad at him, he reached out to hm in the only proper way for BFFs to reach out: Twitter.  This was the tweet that Munoz posted to his amigo Anderson:

@SpiderAnderson U r my friend! Don't want to disrespect at all! I honor our friendship. I need to talk to u!

I love it when people work out their relationship problems where everyone else can see. Otherwise, how would I know all their private stuff? In any case, it was a nice sort of gesture but if I've learned anything at all from watching every variation of the Real Housewives franchise, it's that you can never really work things out on Twitter. Passive-aggressive text messaging is so much more effective.

Status: Moot for now. Munoz won't have to worry about a title shot for a little while yet since Dana White confirmed that Chael Sonnen will get his rematch against Anderson Silva next (see next topic).

Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva: Last week, as everyone was heading to Anaheim for the big UFC on Fox 1 event, we saw a tweet from Anderson Silva announcing his arrival. Very soon after that, we saw these tweets from Chael Sonnen:

The bug got to Anaheim today, I get in tomorrow. We are having a meeting, and I AIN'T BRINGING FLOWERS....

As Champion, I need nothing except my list of demands. Fighting on the date I'VE selected is my right for being better than you, Yes YOU.

Andy won't stand up to me, but he'll have to sit before me tomorrow. Perhaps bowing and kissing my boot is in order. MEDIUM RARE!

And, of course we (I) became giddy with anticipation. Although we were not privy to the details of the meeting, we heard a little about it soon after it took place, from none other than UFC President Dana White. In an appearance on the Jim Rome Show, White was asked if Silva would be defending his title against Chael Sonnen and he responded:

"It's the fight that everybody wants to see. People want to see Chael vs. Anderson," White said. "Anderson is in this position where he feels like the guy is so disrespectful he doesn't want to give him a shot.

"But Anderson will end up fighting Chael. The answer is yes."

No information was given about when or where, and Silva is currently recovering from a shoulder surgery, so that may not be decided for some time. This did not stop Chael from tweeting to Silva:

Status: Woo hoo! I can't wait!

Forrest Griffin vs. Common Sense, Human Decency and All That is Right With the World: Forrest Griffin had a terrible rant/meltdown on Twitter this past week but because he posted some pretty despicable things, I am not going to fully rehash them here. You can read this, however, to get a taste of what Forrest said and to see the differing opinions on the matter that various MMA fans have (I'm warning you right now that it ain't pretty).

It turns out that Dana White did recognize the inappropriate nature of Griffin's comments and, while stopping short of making a complete condemnation, did admit that the UFC, as a promotion, should probably be more careful about this sort of thing. Finally, Forrest Griffin did apologize for his comments and also made a donation to a Las Vegas area rape crisis center. While this certainly does not just make everything OK, it would appear to at least be a step in the right direction.

Status: I don't know if Forrest Griffin is ever going to win another one of those UFC Twitter awards. Let's just hope he can behave from here on out.
