Dan Hardy Has Something to Say About Wrestlers

Dan Hardy recently wrote an article for This is Nottingham, in which he defends his teammates Nick Osipzak (I LOVE YOU!) and Andre Winner and tells us what he thinks about the glut of wrestlers in MMA.  According to Dan, darling Nick got tired and that's why he lost.  However, it's during his defense of Winner that Hardy let's us know his feelings about wrestlers in MMA.

Hardy say's that Winner's opponent, Nik Lentz "...clung to Dre's thigh like a sailor to a mast during a storm" for "three coma inducing rounds."  (Props to Hardy for the simile usage!)

From there, Hardy says:

There are a lot of people out there calling themselves 'UFC fighters' who are nothing of the kind. In the UFC, you should go for finishes.

You should work for 15 minutes to knock your opponent out, submit him, or improve your position to give yourself the best chance of doing either.

But there's guys out there who just want to use wrestling to hold a stalemate for 15 minutes, without ever risking going for ground and pounds or attempting submissions.

Dan goes on to suggest that this type of fighting is against the rules, as, according to the "Unified MMA rules" "...timidiy is outlawed..."

I'm not surprised that Hardy wrote this article, but rather that it took so long to happen.  I imagine that he's over wrestlers after his fight against GSP, and his teammates losses last week pushed him over the edge.  I've been saying for awhile that all fight camps needs to start learning how to defend against wrestlers, though Hardy takes a different approach by suggesting this is something that should be handled by the Athletic Commissions.  The fact of the matter is that wrestlers are killing it in MMA, and fighters who want to stay competitive need to learn how to do something about it.  As a side note, I also LOVE Satarma's suggestion that the bring in the Pride yellow card for stalling fighters.  So everyone, what do you think needs to happen here?  Let us know in the comments.

yellow cards

Or point deductions. Now, now. Put down the pitch forks. Many many stalls are due to good defense and the wrestler is trying. So I’m thinkin maybe half, or a quarter as many stalls need discipline as the casual boo fan. There are “boring” fighters who always try to get better position, say a jon fitch.but then there are times when a guyis just trying to stall, ala couture v. Vera (hate on me but couture was in “push against the fence and survive”mode for 5-10 minutes that fight

Hey Hardy!

MMA was created to simulate a street fight as safely as possible.
If you get taken down, and can’t get up, that’s on you.
Either learn to wrestle or develop a sick guard.
Quit yer bitchin and improve, you sound like a whiney bitch right now.

actually he has a point. that fight was boring and i agree that guy was just hugging that leg.

i say bring on the yellow cards. if the wrestler can’t take down his opponent in 30 seconds. that is plenty of time to take him down.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. Utah and Boise take care of business in week one. Don't be surprised if they both go undefeated.

No way.

If you can’t stuff the takedown, then so be it.
There are no yellow cards on the street.

the fact is he was stuffing the takedown and the guy just kept hugging his leg.

i love wrestlers but i want wrestlers.to get them down in a certain time and ground and pound. maynard gets em down quick and so does lesnar. it does not have to be a yellow card but a ref stoppage and a standup.

I suppose its really quite amiguous at the moment

Theres no real….guideline in reality. Some refs will let it go 5 minutes of inactivity. Another ref will stand you up when you are in mount. That’s the part that kinda gets me. The lack of conformity across the board on the rules.

Yup

Change the rules/judging… [Not a fan of taking fighters earnings/Yellow Cards.]

I don’t really think that, even if yellow cards were introduced, they should be used to take away the fighter’s pay. I think they should be used to take a point from the fighter. But I DO think they, or a similar system, should be introduced. If that means refs across the board standing the fight up to prevent the dreaded lay and pray, or taking points after more than like two standups, well, that works too.

The problem I have with the pure wrestlers in MMA is that they are one-dimensional and they are proud of it. Wrestling has it’s place in MMA, and it shouldn’t be removed. However: fighters who can only stand, and have no ground game, are always criticized for not being more well-rounded. Why don’t we have that level of criticism for wrestlers? Why is it such a radical idea that wrestlers need to add something else to their game? It can only make them more successful, not to mention more popular with the crowd that hates to see two guys together on the ground. Give a really good wrestler some bjj and someone’s gonna lose an arm/leg. Give a wrestler some sick punching power and you’ll have Brock Lesnar.

Remember the Askren/Hornbuckle fight? Ben Askren, as much as I don’t like him personally, fought a spectacular fight that night. He was the perfect example of a wrestler trying to finish. He neutralized everything Hornbuckle tried, but also dealt out some ground ‘n pound that would have probably ko’d a lot of guys.

Hardy has a point, and I agree with him mostly, but I also think that when he and his teammates need to work on some wrestling defense. Same with Dan Hornbuckle. MMA means mixed martial arts… all fighters should have at least some rudimentary form of defense against what their opponent is bringing to the game.

word

Askren is a great example, and is becoming one more and more. If youve ever seen his first few fights- he’s sooooo one dimensional. He put some weak competition away, but you can tell its just wrassle to position and if possible start punching aimlessly.

Now he has began to work some technical GnP, as well as BJJ moves. Sure, he has a ways to go, but the improvement is remarkable and noticeable. Wrestlers/BJJ is my favorite combo. Like Jake Shield’s AJJ. It’s just so lethal…
