MMA You Want To Watch This Week 9/27 - 10/3
Monday, Monday. Not just a great old song, it's also the beginning of what should be a fantastic week of fights. Yeah, I know I say that a lot - but this time we're talking three events in three days, and all free!!
So, I ask you, what could be better than free fights? Other than Babalu finally being named PDOTW, that is? Yeah, ok, don't answer that. I know you people can probably come up with all kinds of twisted stuff. For that matter, so can I. Ahem. But anyway, some awesome fights are happening this week! The bad news, though, is that a number of them are happening all at the same time.
Lake Charles, LA
Thursday, September 30, 8pm, FSN
Finally, the women's 115 lb semi final fights. Seems like we've been waiting forever for this! We've got Megumi Fujii vs. Lisa Ward, and Zoila Frausto vs. Jessica Aguilar. Frankly, I will be amazed if Fujii doesn't make it to the final, but, then, prior to this past Saturday I would have told you I'd be amazed if Mirko Filipovic didn't kick Frank Mir in the head repeatedly. So color me amazed and remember that (cliche though it is), anything can happen in MMA. Whatever the outcome of these fights, they should at the very least be exciting. There is one small problem, though...
Broomfield, CO
Thursday, September 30, 9pm, Versus
Yeah, that's right. WEC 51 is the same night as Bellator 31. It's not fair, I know. Jose Aldo vs. Manny Gamburyan, Donald Cerrone vs. Jamie Varner, Miguel Torres, Leonard Garcia, Chan Sung Jung - this card is packed and it's going to be insane. Without a doubt, there is going to be some crazy action happening Thursday night. I strongly suspect that I'm going to have two televisions on, and I'll be running from room to room to see both events.
K-1 World GP
Seoul, South Korea
Saturday, October 2, 2am, HDNet
Yes, yes, I know it's not MMA. But it's here anyway. Because every single time I hear the crowd boo at the wrestling/grappling in MMA, I have to wonder why kickboxing isn't more popular. Ok, so that's not the only reason I'm including this here. Besides my ongoing campaign to get more of you to watch kickboxing, there are some familiar faces in this event that you're gonna want to see. Like... Alistair Overeem, for example. Oh, yeah, and some guy named Andrei Arlovski is on the card! Yep, Arlovski is venturing into K-1 waters. It could be bad for him, but on the other hand, it could be great. All I know is that I'll be awake and watching Saturday morning. I doubt I'll be live blogging it, unless a bunch of you beg me to (and we all know how likely that is lol!), but I will be watching. And don't forget to check out fellow SBN site Head Kick Legend for lots of K-1 and Japanese MMA info. They rock! :)
One other quick note, HDNet Fights is going to replay DREAM.16 Friday night at 10. Prior to that, Fighting Words with Mike Straka is talking to recent Pantydropper Cain Velasquez at 8:30, and of course at 9 pm is Inside MMA (BAS!). That should all lead nicely into the K-1 event at 2am. Why would you ever want to watch anything but HDNet on Friday nights??
If you know of a smaller event or anything I might have missed that is going to be broadcast nationally or worldwide (Internet PPV or free streams included) and you think I should list it, hit me up at satarma@gmail.com or on Twitter @satarma42. I'm also accepting donations for tickets/transportation to see any upcoming event live - or just to pay my PPV bills. :)
