Waiting to Exhale?
The New York Post has a story about John Giuffrida, a 42 year old mixed martial arts fighter who's in a bit of hot water with the FDNY. John has been collecting over $74,000 a year in disability for seven years due to lung problems he developed as a result of his work as a firefighter. However, John has been fighting for several years.
From the article:
Among the first-responders on 9/11, Giuffrida says he spent 30 days -- including 30 hours nonstop -- doing the grim and toxic recovery work at Ground Zero.
The next year, FDNY docs determined he was suffering from asthma and other lung ailments and placed him on light duty. By 2003, he was out with his tax-free disability pension despite his attempts to stay on, he said.
"I have nothing to hide," Giuffrida told The Post from his Shark River, NJ, home. "The conditions that precluded me from being a firefighter in no way preclude me living an active life in order to preserve my health."
Mayor Bloomberg is asking the FDNY pension board to look into whether Giuffrida's disability should end. I tried to see if there are any other fighters out there who have asthma, but I couldn't find anything. Thoughts?

is this workmans comp or a fire department pension? insurance companies hire private detectives......
to see if people are cheating the system. if he was an mma fighter he will have to pay back that money.
I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. I still will always follow the Mountain West Conference. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez and face the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs Roy Nelson where he will defeat JDS and stake his claim as pound for pound champion. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. 1 month till the first game of college football. UTAH vs Pitt. September 2nd 2010.

Maybe not a fighter, but Gary Roberts (retired hockey player; played for Calgary, Toronto, others) was a top-level athlete for years – and actually opened his own chain of fitness and personal training centers – with extremely bad asthma and breathing problems. He talked frequently about having to learn to control his breathing very carefully and have better cardio than everyone else because he couldn’t oxygenate as quickly as other people. He was renowned through his career for his endurance, grit, speed and aggressiveness. So it’s POSSIBLE, but one could argue that he could still be working with that kind of problem; however, perhaps not working as a firefighter given the risk of exposure to smoke, etc.

give him a desk job
No? Wouldn’t that work for everyone?
Even a broken clock is right two times a day.
