On Homophobia in MMA

Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate:

I wrote this up on my blog and thought I'd share the heart of it here.

It may shock you to learn this, but I am not the only bisexual fan of mixed martial arts. I’m not even the only female bisexual fan of mixed martial arts. In fact, many of the women who report on or participate in mixed martial arts are queer. Lucky for me, I don’t hear fighters, promoters or fans going around calling each other dykes. Instead, their homophobic statements reflect a disdain for male homosexuality.

Logic leads me to believe that perhaps these fighters wish to distance themselves from the obvious initial observation of the casual sports fan of nearly naked men entangled on the mat in positions that remind them of sex acts.  Judging by the homophobic comments I’ve heard from fighters, they would surely be disgusted by the thought of a gay man becoming turned on by watching their sweaty muscled body rub up against another man.

Assuming this is true, isn’t it amusing that they might prefer a straight man become turned on by the thought of them getting knocked unconscious?

I admire fighter’s bodies as much as any fan; male, female, gay or straight. I might even like a fighter more because I think they’re sexy and have little celebrity crushes. But do you know what keeps me hot for this sport despite the fact that I get the feeling by some that I am invading macho sacred grounds?

It’s heart. The heart we witness when fighters stand up after a knockdown, wobbly, knowing full well they could get leveled again in seconds. Fighters who are dominated, bleed like faucets, tear muscles and break bones but answer the bell for the next round because they have the heart to fight until their bodies won’t go anymore.

It saddens me that so many people who love this sport don’t appreciate the heart and courage required to live a life as an out gay man. Sexism is still deeply entrenched in our society and many people cannot accept gay men who behave on the streets and between the sheets in a way that they qualify as female. I guess they don’t consider the balls of steel required to be openly gay in a world where you are continually ostracized, a  frequent target of violence, not protected by your government and told you are a gross, hellbound abomination.

Well said.

I just read all 400+ comments to this post on BE. Oy. It was good to note that the majority of the guys posting were in agreement with you (as am I). The others would have been funny if they hadn’t been serious.

i would not care at all that a gay man (i'm sure there are many too)was in mma. if he was making me money i would praise

him like his straight counterparts. i love mma and think it’s the toughest sport in the world. it’s pro football players that are doing mma workouts these days. the smart ones. it’s becoming a business to me like college football. yes i do have certain guys i like but i tend to know if my guy has not much of a chance to win. some people might think that is cold but i’m treating everyone equally regardless of sexual preference. this goes for womens mma too and i really hope bellator’s women tourney does extremely well. i would love to see more womens mma including bonehead dana white having them in the ufc. just b/c he can’t see women fighting should not matter. he is supposed to be a businessman and cater to the fans. peace.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. I still will always follow the Mountain West Conference. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez and face the winner of Junior Dos Santos vs Roy Nelson where he will defeat JDS and stake his claim as pound for pound champion.

What I don't get is

Why is it Ok to be openly gay (whatever that means) but its sexist to be openly straight?

Gentlemanly indeed!

Apologies for not responding, called away for a funeral. I personally would never say it’s sexist to be openly straight (never heard that term before!). Rather the issue here is the use of the term “fag” or “homo” as a slur against another fighter/person.

I have reread it several times… but I still can’t see anywhere in there where she said it was sexist to be openly straight, or even hinted at it.

My view is it's great to be true to yourself, whatever your sexuality is

What the hell are you talking about?

Nobody’s saying that. And if they are, then they’re fucking idiots and their opinions shouldn’t be considered seriously.

That doesn’t even make sense.

Homphobia is a problem plaguing society in general

It’s sad that even today gay people are treated by some with disdain purely because they are attracted to members of the same sex. It’s embarrassing that people can dislike someone, say offensive things to them or campaign for them to have less human rights purely because they’re homosexual. Unfortunately there have been many cases in MMA of MMA fighters and personalities using homophobic slurs to make a point (Dana’s infamous rant about Loretta Hunt comes to mind) and to my knowledge there aren’t any openly gay MMAsts. I find it sad and embarrassing that people still think that it’s wrong for 2 people of the same sex to be together and I hope that this sort of attitude is eliminated during my lifetime.

It’s a problem that exists in many sports, in England Castleford RLFC just got fined after their sports made homophobic chants at the only openly gay active British sportsmen rugby player Gareth Thomas. Very few gay sportsmen come out of the closet at least during their pro careers and those that do face a homophobic backlash from moronic “fans” when they do. That to me is wrong and I really hope that this problem doesn’t linger in MMA.

As for the article, good point on it taking courage to come out of the closet, this should be commended by society in general and it must be difficult for any gay person to openly admit their sexuality when there are so many people telling them that it’s wrong to be gay. I can’t even imagine what my gay friends went through when they came out of the closet, all I can do is admire their bravery and continue to support them with my friendship.

valid points

Being an openly gay fighter… man talk about balls! The sheer hate from the casual “boo” fans in tapout shirts would be fuckin bad. You know a few drunkswould throw bottles during the walk out. Then finding opponents might be tough. Finding a gym and workout partners would be the worst (probably the hardest part)

Itcould be very detrimental to ones career. I wish I had internet, id refind a video about a bjj artist from the south who had a very promising career. Was winning tons of circuit tourneys thenword got out he was gay…. to be continued.

But to be fair on why you hear stuff like “fag” and not “dyke”, its not necessarily a homophobic thing. Sure, the word can be used as a homophobic slang. But often calling someone a fag or gay or something has absolutely nothing to do with sexual preferende in guys minds. Agree with it or not, it is what it is. I’ve said “that’s fuckin gay” to something that’s not about sexual orientation before.

Hahaha!

Wow, funniest thing to happen in MMA a “gals guide to MMA” whining about fighter’s saying the word fag lol. By the way Dyke is a word I hear a lot of people use. To the gay fighter of course a straight man would hesitate to roll with a man if he’s gay, that might just be his preference, man up twinkle nuts stop whining.

Who’s the moron claiming straight men get turned on by other men getting knocked out, and having some chemical imbalance in her brain to compare it to a gay guy getting turned on by 2 sweaty guys battling it out. What a GOOFY site and I look forward to more of this non sense because it’s HIGHLY entertaining lol.

Plus watching a couple Joe Rogan podcasts explaining how some gay men think when they’re sexually aroused is EPIC. It would explain why some straight men wouldn’t want to roll with a man that’s Gay. A lot lot of Ji Jitsui practioner’s watch that pod cast and must have seen it. Something along the lines of “I want to shoot a load on that guys Hairy Back and chest” Just something insane like that. So the gay guy that can’t find Ji jitsui partners, that must be a shitty situation lol but I can’t blame those straight guys.
