WEC 47 Random Thoughts and Ramblings

Wec47banner_medium_medium

After having some time to digest yesterday's fights, I have some thoughts I'd thought I'd share.  Yes, yes, you're welcome.

Miguel Torres.  What happened?  Was it nerves, did Benavidez get lucky, or is he really the better fighter?  Guys like Torres and Faber have been the poster boys for the WEC for awhile, and it doesn't feel right that they're no longer on top.  I don't know what I'm trying to say here.  If you had told me yesterday morning that Torres was going to be outmatched, I would have laughed at you.  I guess that's one of the things that's so great about MMA.  On any given day, even the best guys can lose.

Brian Bowles made it two rounds with a broken hand, which he says he got with his first punch.  Cruz was definitely king of the fancy footwork last night, though it seemed like by the end of round 2 Bowles had sort of figured out his steps.  Would have loved to see what the fight would've looked like if Bowles hadn't been one hand down.  I do feel awful for the guy, but the whole time, all I could think about was Urijah Faber, who fought 5 rounds against Mike Brown with two broken hands.

Last night was no doubt a night of upsets, but I don't know that anyone is truly surprised that Jens Pulver didn't win.  The guy is a true legend and ambassador for MMA, but I think his journey as a fighter has come to an end.  I'd hate to see him go out "The Wrestler" style, doing regional shows for no money and ending up a physical wreck.  There has to be a commentator job out there somewhere for this guy.  Like we talked about last night with Bauzen, this just makes me think so much more that these fighters need some sort of organization (not necessarily saying a union) that can help them get health care and better pay for their fights.  That way, when its time to retire, they actually have something to retire with.

the bantamweight division is kinda in disaray. the guy bowles fought i think was 14-1.

another wec that a 3 or 4 round robin would have been perfect. too bad that nevada only put four fights for us to wager on. i could have used bart p. on my roundrobin. he was not one of the fights you could wager on.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. I was building a house, I don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. Bang. "Unforgiven" I drink your milkshake. I drink it up! "There Will BE Blood"

I tell you what, this is the perfect example of putting a few bucks on the underdog to see what happens.

the wec is full of upsets. you just have to pick the right one.
