What's so great about Brock Lesnar?

Complete and full disclosure:  I don't like this guy.  I don't.  Nope.  Not one bit. And you can't make me like him, either.  I haven't liked him from the very beginning.  Sorry, Brock (I can call you Brock, right? ;-). So, as expected you'll get way more cons from me on this one.  Ok, let's get this over with...

Con: Let's start with the obvious--it's been stated on this site before, as well as countless others.  He's got a giant phallus on his chest.  What I don't get is why it's pointed towards his head.  As if to say "Hey, the cock is up here".

Brock_medium

Con: No neck, cauliflower ears.

Pro: He has a WWF background, so he knows how to entertain.  I have nothing against guys who come to MMA from pro wrestling (see: My crush on Bobby Lashley and his tiny nipples).

Con: Diverticulitis, Mono...make a girl swoon!  Seriously, though, doesn't it seem like he's recovering rather quickly?  Was it real, or a stunt to get some attention?  I would hope no one would fake an illness like that.  Any experts in the house to comment on the illness and how long it takes to recover?

Con:  He lied and bad mouthed the Canadian health care system in order to advance his political opinion.  They hosted a kick-ass Winter Olympics and deserve some respect, eh.  And how 'boot that hockey team?

Pro or a Con:  Seems like a loner.  He trains on his own in his own gym on his own land.  He doesn't belong to a team and doesn't seem to have any friends in MMA.  I can't decide if this is good or bad.  It makes me sad for him.  I'm sure he doesn't care.

Pro: He really is a good fighter.  No question about it, the boy can punch.  However, I do think UFC needs to consider adding a Super Heavyweight division for guys like Brock and others over 265.  What do you think?

Con: I really have a hard time that he was able to go for the heavyweight title after only 3 MMA fights.  I really feel like he hasn't paid his dues in MMA. Where were the smaller, regional fights?  The ones in small buildings with no heat for a grand prize of $500?  Seems like he cut ahead of the line.  No cuts, no butts, no coconuts.

So, I ask you loyal readers, what's so great about Brock?  Tell us in the comments.  Have I missed him rescuing puppies or handing food out to the poor, or actually smiling?  He really seems like a mean-spirited d-bag to me.  Convince me otherwise.

i agree with 95% of what you wrote, the 5% being that cauliflower ear is a con and that’s only an issue of taste. :)

i liked brock lesnar for about 5 minutes while he smashed in frank mir’s face at ufc 100, then went back to hating the ogre again. mir just a tad bit more of a tool than lesnar is.

who else would you put in your +265 division?

by penna25 on Mar 1, 2010 11:21 AM EST reply actions

265 division

Big Country
Tank Abbott
Alistair Overeem
Brett Rogers

Hmm..who else?

(also, I’m not tasting anyone’s cauliflower ear!)

werdum and fedor could probably get up to 265 easily. kimbo too.

it would be interesting to say the least. (go big country!)

Love Big Country

The band, the song, and the fighter!

I really didn’t like him until TUF. And then, after I read what he said about his wife, I really became a fan!

For as much crap as Lesnar has had to take, why does anyone wonder why he destroys people in the ring, then mocks them afterward? Mir, Herring and Carwin have all made statements about Brock containing words like “fake,” “scripted,” and “folding chairs.” As a result, he beat Herring into retirement, beat Mir into a bloody mess and in the summer he will either put an even more severe beating on Mir or give Carwin what he deserves. Randy Couture is the only guy Lesnar has fought so far who actually respected the fact that Lesnar is a bad mofo, and as a result Lesnar didn’t get in Randy’s face after their fight.

He’d probably get a lot more respect if he acted like he deserved it. He came from one of the least respected ‘sports’ in the country, he should be ready for that crap. If he’d worked his way up, came into the HW title picture with a handful of good, solid fights, then started destroying people, it might be different. But when he comes in out of nowhere and acts like he still thinks he’s in pro wrestling, what does he expect people are going to say?

I will say this, though. His recent response to Mir’s comments was a lot more subdued and mature than I’d ever expected of him. So maybe he’s chilled out some. I guess we’ll see in the next few months.

See, Randy is a class act, and Brock really needs to learn that from him, if he hasn’t already.

Randy treated Brock with respect, and Brock treated Randy with respect in return. It’s a 2-way street. Very simple. It’s ridiculous to expect Mir, Herring, etc. to say what they said about Brock and then have Brock kiss their asses afterward. As far as “earning” a shot, what the hell is that? He absolutely crushed not one but two multiple-time UFC HW champs. Had he not won those fights, or if he had lost to Herring after losing to Mir, he would either be on undercards or out of the UFC. But he won, and now he’s the champ until someone beats him.

by P-Dub on Mar 2, 2010 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

Lesnar doesn’t have to kiss anyone’s ass. But he didn’t need to act like one, either. And I never really said anything about “earning” a shot. I was only trying to illustrate how I thought Mir, Herring, etc could have perceived Lesnar. And that if he had worked his way up through the ranks, the perception would likely have been different. Yeah, there were stupid things said. All Lesnar really needed to do was answer with his fists and leave it.

You’re right, it may be understandable that Lesnar gets so mad that he has to gloat over winning. It’s a human thing to do. But if he can just learn to take his wins without the parading around and mocking, he’ll soon be one of the most respected atheletes in mma.

Yeah

I agree with P-Dub. Everybody gets on Brock for acting like a fool, and rightfully so, but nobody bothers to realize that Mir, Carwin, and Herring were the ones running their mouths first and acting disgraceful. Nobody comes down on them. The truth of the matter is that it’s fashionable to dislike Brock and to say he comes from WWE. You could say he came from the NFL like Schaub. You could say he came from NCAA championship wrestling background like Cain. But no, everybody focuses on the WWE. Why? Because it’s fashionable. I don’t particularly like Brock but I’m becoming more of a fan of his because of the bad rap he gets. This nonsense about him not earning his shot has to stop too. I mean, come on. In a sporting sense he didn’t earn it but people continually complain about fights that aren’t “exciting” and fighters always talk about being “exciting” for the fans. In that sense Brock did earn his spot. And you know what? He won the belt from one of the greatest champs of all time. Then you know what he did? He defeated another all time great to keep the belt. Did Anderson earn his shot at the Rich’s middleweight title? Not according to this line of thinking. Sure he should take the high road but just think of how you’d react if every one of your peers mocked you and never gave you an ounce of respect before you even started. What this all boils down to is jealousy. The fighters are jealous that someone like Brock came in and beat down Mir before losing to a hail mary submission after a terrible stand up by the worst ref in the game. He would have won that fight with any other ref . They are jealous that he came in an whooped a tough as nails vet like Herring. They are jealous that he beat a legend for the title and then destroyed another former champ. All in 4 fights. Jealousy’s a bitch. I wouldn’t sit there and take these idiots disrespecting me in front of the world without taunting them in the end and most of you wouldn’t either.

The guy lost a big money fight, a ton of weight, and had to stay inactive for about a year. What positive would he get for faking all that?

However, I do think UFC needs to consider adding a Super Heavyweight division for guys like Brock and others over 265. What do you think?
Not enough fighters to fill up a division for guys over 230, let alone over 265. And if 265+ is for SHW, Brock would still cut to HW.

Sure this line could hold validity when they set up Couture vs Lesnar, but isn’t this argument moot, since he already beat the champ and defended the belt?

I don't like how he punches

The little hammer fists felt even smaller than usual as he was pounding Frank Mir’s head in.

Otherwise, I’m pretty indifferent about Brock. I like Frank a lot more though for some reason, and it’s probably because he can form a sentence, if I ignore all the ones about killing Brock.

Yeah. 4xl gloves coming at your face from a 300 pound man. Not exactly small.

you can measure the damage by the effects on Mir's legs

Notice that even with the first couple of shots he’s still trying to maintain contol of Brock in a weird half guard… but then a few more rain down and his legs just go limp and Brock seizes on the moment.

I’m in agreement with you on Lesnar. Completely. Sure, he can fight. Ok. We know that now. Doesn’t mean he’s not coming across as an arrogant jerk who learned everything he knows about sportsmanship from pro wrestling.

I do, reluctantly, have one more thing for you on the ‘Pro’ side, though: even though I’ll never pay to watch this idiot thump his chest in the cage, plenty of casual fans will. He has brought more attention to mma in general. Maybe not the best attention, but… well, overall it’s probably a good thing.

Personally though, if I have to watch a fighter act like a jerk, I’d rather watch Sobral. At least he’s hot.

This sport

Isn’t exactly about sportsmanship anymore if you haven’t noticed. You are going to have to dislike at least 50% of the fighters on the UFC’s roster if you are going to go by that. The martial arts respect factor has been replaced by the “gotta hype the fight no matter what it takes” mantra. So far in the last two weeks we’ve had Mir and Davis both wish death on other fighters. We had hardy post photoshopped pics of Davis in a gay manner. We’ve had four different fighters bashing Hardy saying he doesn’t deserve the title shot and saying he’s no good. That’s just off the top of my head. Everybody has gone the Tito route and runs their mouth whether they mean it or not. So for me, I’m not judging these guys on their sportsmanship anymore because there’s a precious few fighters that actually have the respect of traditional martial artists anymore. Why is that? Because it’s a business that’s why. And on top of that it’s a business with a very limited career life span and they have to make their money while the can. I fault nobody for what they are doing.

Anyone who calls out the Canadian health care system in favor of the American health care system is an absolute moron. Sure when you’re a multi-millionaire the health care in the US will be great. If he was middle-class then he would realize the enormous difference. When you don’t have to worry about money when going to the doctor you will praise the system, but for us normal folk it is an absolute nightmare to say the least.

He will get his when he fights Cain, Carwin or Dos Santos.

I’ve stated before my dislike of Lesnar. It’s like you say, just too many cons. I don’t like the really huge guys fighting guys 40-50 pounds lighter. It would be like watching GSP and Miguel Torres. Interesting for a split second and then it’s over. I just don’t see the sport there. I know Semmy Schilt has fought MMA before. That would be intriguing to see how Brock would do against someone closer to his size or bigger, like he is to most of the guys he’s fought.

I’ve seen to many fighters in the HW division get gassed recently (TUF 10 and Rolles Gracies anyone?) to have any real interest in that division. What’s the point of watching a fight if they only have 2 minutes of juice to work with?
