Dream Fight: Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza vs. Damien Maia

Anyone who reads our comments knows DrunkenMidget, or Midge as we call him. He wrote a fabulous little article called What the Hell is Pride, so as a reward, he's been allowed to submit a dream fight. Let the crazy begin! (just joking, we love you Midge!)
I know at least Beth loves her BJJ, and I can only assume Donna does too (as all cool kids should) and this would be the definitive BJJ match of the century. Both Middleweights! These two are the best in the world, and have dominated just about everyone they've ever laid their hands on in jiujitsu matches, as well as MMA matches. What makes it so intriguing to me, is that they have waaaay different styles of BJJ. Damien Maia has this beautiful, smooth style where he uses his opponents movement to put them where he wants them. It's like he anticipates where they are going to get away from him (usually cuz he allows them to think they can go there) and puts himself in the best position for where they are going to go. He's a squirrely mother fucker. Then Jacare (Brazilian for Crocodile) has this brutal, powerful style. He forcefully puts you where he wants, when he wants you there. And once he grabs you, you just cant get away. Like a crocodile's jaw. They are polar opposite styles of BJJ, yet both so very lethal with their arts. I'd love to see who would triumph.
That's my dream match. Even more than silva v. Fedor (which yes, is probably #2. Maybe #1.5)

The More You Know
Just wanted to let you know that Felix pointed out that this fight did actually already take place. Here’s the video if you’d like to see how it all went down.

NICE!!!!
I dunno the ruleset in Brasileiro competition (like if its ADCC rules, or if different things consist of points etc) but it seems to me Maia dominated dispite Jacare claiming victory at the end. Maia consistently pulled guard and put Jacare in danger nearly every time- taking his back on several occassions, all ending in Jacare being saved by going out of bounds. I can assume taking ones back in Brasileiro is worth some points. Jacares only real offensive was one pass of the guard which resulted in nothing, and then an attack on the leg when Maia was getting off his back when they were out of bounds (but counting that it like counting a punch that came after the bell)
That was awesome. But I still wonder what would occur in an MMA match for several reasons. Less the standup- more so cuz A- no Gi. Which is giant. Maia’s strategy with no gi would have to be different…. and B- the cage. No octagon. When Maia took Jacare’s back he wouldn’t be stood back up in mma, and there would be no gi for jacare to grab to protect himself!
At the end of the day-awesome. A comment there says they had 3 matches, and i feel stupid for not googling that shit…

I don't know if I really count this though
You’re talking MMA today, and that was BJJ years ago, right?

And anyway, the guy pointed it out to show what stupid bitches we are. He hates our site, so he’ll jump on any chance to knock us down.

Actually Donna its a bit late don't know if you'll read this
Its happened 3 times. Jacare submitted Maia at ADCC 2005 and I believe the year before at the Mundials (can never get a confirmation on result and vid doesn’t seem to exist anywhere) won a boring decision where Maia was defending himself the whole time while Jacare was looking for the TD.
The time Maia won – He “won” a 0-0 advantage decision after Jacare (who was competing in his weight class and the open-weight absolute) had fought 3 grueling matches prior to that bout.
Gimme 1 round!

My Dream Fight
BJ Penn vs Jose Aldo.

I changed my mind...
my dream fight is Randy v. Fedor again. After watching Rogers vs. Fedor again, and seeing how weak Fedor was when pushed up against the cage… it just made me think what Randy could do there. If couture is a 10 out of 10 when pushing his opponent to the cage, then Rogers is like a 3 or something! Nobody does that better than couture, and that is Fedor’s weakpoint.
I truely think Randy would dominate Fedor, and I can only wish he continues to win til Fedor is pulled to the UFC…. I want it soooo baaaad

That would not be a good MMA fight. I’m a huge Maia fan and have lots of respect for Jacaré. But history show us that when you put two top notch BJJ guys inside the octagon they nulify each other jiu jitsu and just engage in some pretty lame boxing…
Just look at Maia vs Dan Miller. (I’m happy Maia won, bu the fight was boring…)
