Dream Fight - Alistair Overeem vs. Brock Lesnar

Alistair-brock_medium

This weeks Dream Fight comes to us from Lizzielovesfighting.  You know what else Lizzie loves?  Gals Guide to MMA, which loves her right back.  Yes, GGMMA is self-aware.

It's a little nerve wracking for me to offer up an opinion on fighting, but as Gals Guide to MMA proves women like MMA and women have opinions about MMA. This is my dream fight and also my opinion about whether MMA needs a super-heavyweight class. I think that Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem would be a good fight. Maybe one of Lesnar's best fights since entering MMA or at least size wise most evenly matched. Obviously he didn't just pop up out of nowhere. He has football and wrestling experience but it seems to me that his MMA fights have been the result of simply being much bigger than anyone he has fought. His only loss was dealt by Frank Mir, a jui jitsu technician. Their second fight Mir was quite simply over whelmed and overcome by Lesnar's obvious size and strength advantage not necessarily his skill as a MMA fighter. Though it is obvious he is getting better with a growing set of skills. I think the Shane Carwin fight would have been an eye opener for Lesnar as Carwin was much closer in size. Also Frank Mir has bulked up quite a bit and if his size and strength match up to Lesnar his skills would far surpass any Lesnar has.
But I digress, back to the dream fight. I think one obnoxious oversized bully deserves another. Alistair Overeem has enjoyed success in both kickboxing and MMA. His skill has grown as well. He has also grown to a freakishly behemouth size in a short period of time. As Michael Schiavello and Ray Sefo noted, "his muscles even have muscles". Overeem is now fighting at 260 and is 6'5" and Lesnar is 6'3" and 265 lbs. There are bigger fighters out there. Hong-Man Choi and Semmy Schilt come to mind, but not two who talk more trash with mostly size to back it up. They are big brash and tough, but also beastly, obnoxious and insufferable.
I think MMA needs a super-heavyweight class to accommodate this size of fighter. They simply have gotten too big for their britches and too big for a fair match-up with most heavyweights. I don't think bulk should win out over skill. I like a fight and like most people, pull for the underdog.
But fighters must have somewhat equal advantages for the match to be interesting or exciting.
Not since Rodan fought Godzilla would there be two opponents dishing out the pain and destruction to one another as Lesnar/Overeem. If they fight true to form it would be an epic battle with probably quite a lot of bloodshed and misery dealt to both.
I will never forget the pummeling that Mir received and personally won't forgive Brock or Herb Dean for not stopping that fight sooner. But that's another story.
We can always hope for the simultaneous knock out, they both obviously have the power. It couldn't happen to two nicer fellas.

Good post

But Brock does have skill and didn’t use just strength and size to beat Mir. If I can find my exact post over on Bloody Elbow then I will post it here but for now I will just paraphrase. Brock used his size and strength in conjunction with his basic knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu. What you do to a BJJ player is reduce space, flatten the hips, control the hips, control the wrists, and don’t extend your arms or legs. That’s what Brock did and that is basic technique whether anybody wants to admit it or not. If Brock wouldn’t have done any number of those things and just used strength and size then we would have had a repeat of their first fight. Say what you want about Brock but he learned from his mistakes and corrected them. Mir was way to overconfident and cocky about how Brock can’t do a teep, or a darce choke, or a this that or the other thing. That was Mir’s mistake thinking that Brock couldn’t take simple techniques and negate Mir’s BJJ. The size and strength were a huge advantage but would have been meaningless if he didn’t have that basic knowledge and technique. It’s up to Mir now to figure out how to combat what Brock did last time out. Really the only way is to keep it on the feet or as soon as you are taken down start bucking and shrimping immediately. But the last thing probably won’t work to well, even with his added size and strength. This is all assuming that Mir gets past Carwin.

As for Ubereem, if Brock can’t get it to the ground he’s getting ko’d. Period, end of story. If he gets him down he will probably “beat him in to a living death.” If anybody can guess who said that last quote without using the internet you get a nice big attaboy. Or attagirl as the case may be.

I’ve heard Lesnar’s win referred to as lay and pray, but that’s definitely not the case. The fact is, he’s big as hell, he got on top of Mir, and just killed him with is ham sized fists.

Yeah

If you want to watch lay n pray watch Shamrock/Gracie 2 or something. Lay n pray doesn’t get you looking that bad. I don’t like Brock that much but I give him credit for using his attributes to create a game plan to be the best he can be.

LnP = 15-minute decision (or 25 minutes in a champ. fight.)
Brock vs. Mir = 8-minute beating, possible hate crime if it had taken place in Massachusetts.

The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful

We really don't see too much LnP any more.

A couple of years ago there was a lot of it happening, with fighters just getting a takedown and laying there throwing the occasional punch or elbow, and the refs wouldn’t stand them up at all. What we see now is what dedstrk316 mentioned about Brock; the wrestlers that would have used LnP are now using basic anti-jits to smother and grind their opponents out. The BJJ crowd hasn’t figured out how to overcome this approach just yet, although they most certainly will.

Nice.

Brock isn’t the bursting hulk he used to be. Before his last fight with Mir he said he really re-tooled his workout routine to cut down on unnecessary muscle in the obvious places (chest and arms) in favor of an improvement to his core muscles, like his hips and abdomen.

The general theory on Ubereem is that he can’t pass a SAC drug test, which is why he’s fighting overseas.

Funny

looking at those two pics when I just recently found this over on BE.

Brock was always huge chested and so it isn’t hard to see why he’s the size he is today.
