I've got my comfy pants on and a venti coffee to my right, let's do this!  On a side note, we have a special guest star this evening joining us for the fights, my Mom!  She's the one who got Donna and I into MMA, so I'm super jazzed that she's watching with us.

Star-divide

Miller vs. Lauzon

Lauzon just grabbed his crotch, discovered that it's still there and is now ready to fight.  Anyone who knows me knows that I have a soft spot in my heart for tall skinny boys, so I'm digging Miller.  This fight is starting out great.  Both guys are in there ready to kick some tush, that makes me happy.  Cole Miller whips out an awesome submission, shows some love to Lauzon, and then talks some shit to Dana White.  Great start!

Pyle vs. Ellenberger

Well, these guys have a tough fight to follow.  I hope it kicks as much ass as the Miller/Lauzon fight.  I'm really digging the ground game in the first 2 fights.  It seems like a lot of the fights lately have focused on stand up, and while the joy of a good knockout makes me happy, I've always been more impressed by fights when they go to the ground.  Damn, I was checking on Twitter and missed the end of the fight.  Damn me and my multi-tasking!  Thank goodness for Tivo.  Backflips as victory celebration always make me a bit nervous.  I'm always scared that the guy is not going to make it all the way around and break his neck.  Yes, that is the kind of thought that goes on in my mind.  Scary, I know.

Kampmann vs. Volkmann

Volkmann's chest hair bothers me.  It's not like Forrest's glorious mane of magical chest hair.  I'm going to have to go for Kampmann on this one.  And it's a good thing I did because he wins.  Plus, how could I not go for the guy who has gunsamerica.com on his ass?  I mean, it's a no brainer.  If you couldn't tell, I didn't really give a rat's fart about that fight.  Is that wrong of me?

Munoz vs. Jensen

Wow, Munoz make Jensen his bitch in this fight.  But let's talk about Munoz's nickname for a second.  The Filipino Wrecking Machine?  I mean really, couldn't he find something a little bit longer to use?  But maybe I'm just grumpy because it's friggin' freezing outside.  And sweet Jesus, now he's whipping out a card of people he wants to thank like he's at the Oscars.  I think I just threw up in my mouth, and Joe Rogan looks like he wants to laugh.  In his conversation with Dana White, Joe Rogan calls this "a sick card."  I assume that he means cancer sick and not awesome sick.  But in all fairness, these fights have been pretty awesome.

Update on the home front: Mom is clipping her tonails, Donna is checking her email, and coffee is done.  We're a wild bunch over here.  Non-stop party with the Gals!

Yvel vs. Dos Santos

Ooh, I'm pretty excited about this fight.  Yvel walks in to Thunderstruck, instant respect points!  Not sure how I feel about Dos Santos walking out to "Gonna Fly Now."  It may be just a bit too much.  But goodness, Dos Santos has some quality cauliflower on his left ear.  I wonder if it will burst during the fight.  If it bursts, I wonder if I'll vomit?  Who am I kidding, I would love it!  Bruce Buffer is gonna blow an O-Ring if he keeps up this high energy announcing.  Holy crapola that was a quick fight!  Yvel is protesting the stoppage, but I'm pretty sure he may have crapped his pants a little.  Alas, no ear explosion, but I'm still quite pleased.  Do we get a discount if these fights are over in record time?  Someone talk to Dana about that for me please.

Ludwig vs. Miller

Miller appears to have no neck.  This bothers me.  Yet, it must provide some sort of super ninja skills, because Miller submits Ludwig.  Man these fights are going fast.  I wonder if any of them will make it to the 3rd round.  But hey, I'll take a quick submission or KO anytime over a boring ass decision.

Lauzon vs. Stout

I just adore Joe Lauzon's ears.  They're like a steering wheel for ladies.  Yes, I did mean that in a very, very dirty way.  Lauzon's looking a little creepy intense.  I imagine that he's in some kind of zone where he can only hear his trainers and the voices in his head that tell him to eat paint chips and run naked through the forest at night.  Lauzon's looking a little rough in the second round.  Are we headed for an upset here?  Someone on Twitter said that Sam Stout looks like Bud Bundy, and now that's all I can think of when they show him dammit.  I thought for sure that Lauzon would quickly take this fight to the ground and dominate Stout.  I hate being wrong.  It appears that this may be the first fight to go the distance.  I'm giving this one to Stout if it goes to decision.  And...it goes to a decision.  Stout wins, what a great fight. Major props to both fighters.

Daley vs. Hazelett

Um, the fight's over already.  Daley is a monster.  It does bum me out when fighters don't make weight though.  I shouldn't really say anything, cause I'll gain a pound just by looking at chocolate, however, making weight is part of a fighter's job.

Evans vs. Silva

I'm still not sure who I'm taking on this fight.  My last minute pick goes to SIlva.  I think that Silva's jiu-jitsu will beat out Evans' wrestling.  These guys are rolling around like bantamweights.  I love it!  Ooh, Evans just teabagged Silva.  If anything, it has to be a horrible blow to Silva's morale.  Both guys look exhausted by the second round, and I don't blame them.  I'm exhausted just watching.  I'm guessing that they're getting their moneys worth on the interpreter by showing Silva's corner during the breaks, but I'd sure like to hear what Greg Jackson has to say.  In my imagination, Greg Jackson has developed such a bond with his fighters that they communicate by grunts and clicks.  Oh, and maybe he kisses their foreheads too in between rounds.  That would be nice.  Round 3 brings us Silva bobbing and weaving with his hands down like he's got a big swinging you-know-what.  I hate that.  Shoot, Evans takes the bait and is looking a little wobbly.  Silva is now standing with his hands on his hips.  I wish Evans would have knocked him the eff out.  It would have brought me much joy.  And decision time.  I think Evans took this one, but who knows when it goes to the judges.  Most of the time they seem to be watching a completely different fight than I am.  Yippee, Evans wins.  I'm very pleased to be wrong in this case.

For a cursed card I have to say that this was a wonderfully kick ass night of fights.  Maybe the fighters thought they had to bring it on because of all the shit talk about the crappy card?  Whatever it was, I hope that futures fights are this awesome.

Awesome

Fights on the spike portion of the card. I was 4-4 on my picks and They were all exciting fights. To bad I have to go to sleep now. Have to get up at 4:30 to go to work. I will watch the rest tomorrow assuming I don’t get eaten by a panther.

Poor J-Lau

He came back a few months before his doctors said he should when he got injured. Gassin in the first round- I’m sure he’ll have 3 rounds of juice next time round

Just watched the fights

I was wondering if JDS’ ear would burst as well and I also thought Buffer was going to suffer a stroke.

A bunch of people that I usually watch the fights with thought that the Evans/Silva fight was fixed. I don’t know what fight they were watching.

JDS reminds me of a young Big Nog.

Semtex is a beast but I was pretty impressed with Hazelett. His striking was pretty good.

I was impressed with Miller and Munoz as well.

Great night of fights.

Love the Commentary !!

If there is one thing that I take away from this fight card is this. Fighters coming off of injuries need a tune up fight. I do not think it is fair to have someone like Lauzon or Hazlett who has been on the shelf for the better part of a year to be thrown in to the deep end of the pool. Great night of fights !!

It almost seems everyone took it as a certainty that Lauzon was going to win, but if they wanted to throw him a softball, they picked the wrong guy with Stout.

by Donna on Jan 3, 2010 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

I went against my rule

I never pick a guy to win his first fight back after a long layoff. I didn’t pick Hazelett for that very reason but picked Lauzon.

Rad cousins. I mean I’m a cowboy/sox fan so I’ll keep reading as long as your aren’t a yanks/giants fan. NY or NJ?

Ugh Jets and Mets.

You and I couldn’t be more opposite. I’m a Dolphins/Braves fan. But the Jets are okay, I don’t hate them like I do the Bills and the Pats. And actually the Mets were always my second favorite team before the Braves moved to the east. I was a huge fan of the Mets when they had HoJo, Doc, Straw, Gary Carter, Sid, and all those guys.

Ah, back in the good old days!

I recently read an excellent book called “The Bad Guys Won” about the 1986 Mets team.

by Donna on Jan 5, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

I loved them.

My favorite sports team of all time was the 86 mets. I watched the NL championship game, against the Astros, cross legged for hours because I had to go to the bathroom. I rushed home from school, turned on the tv, and watched the rest of the game. It was a 16 inning game I believe, missed the first few innings, but watched all the rest. Then, during the world series, I had a friend that wanted the Sox to win. We were watching game six and the sox went ahead and I was pissed off. So I pretended to be asleep and was watching with my eyes squinted. Then it happened, the ball went through Buckners legs and I jumped for joy. My buddy was pissed and wanted to go home but we were only kids and he couldn’t. I laughed and laughed. Then when they won game 7 I really let him have it. I loved that team. Great childhood memory.

And

I will definitely pick that book up.

Steering Wheel

Love it! LOL.

And as for Jackson’s cornering, he has this really soothing parental cadence to his voice. It’s kind of strange.

Except when he cornered cowboy for the Henderson fight. That time it was more of a scolding parental cadence. “Sit down, Cowboy!”

Why I love listening to Jackson in a corner

He doesn’t have a corner style, like most guys you see in there. He tailors his behavior to what his fighter needs.

You’ll see him with Cerone and he will yell and scream and force his words into Cowboy’s head,

You’ll see him with GSP and the first 20 seconds are just “Breathe. slow down your thinking. slow down Georges. Breathe” then he will make GSP look directly at him before going into cornering.

You’ll see him calmly soothing Rashad, like he’s a proud calm father.

You’ll see him yellin at Jardine on what he is doing right then throwing in a little something to improve after all the compliments.

He really knows his guys and what works best for them. I was pissed to hear Gurgel translating Silva’s corner when we could have been listening to Jackson corner Evans
