What the Hell is a Cutman?
First I will put a band aid on your boo boo, then I will kiss is better.
A cutman is the person who is responsible for treating injuries to the fighter in between rounds. When a fighter has nosebleeds, cuts or swelling, the cutman will treat these injuries to prevent a stoppage of the fight. Before a fight starts, you will see a cutman put petroleum jelly on a fighters face to make the skin more slippery and less likely to tear. Between rounds, if a fighter has swelling, the cutman will apply pressure with ice to the area to reduce the swelling. If the fighter has a cut, the cutman will apply epinephrine to slow the bleeding and then a product called Avitene which coagulates the blood. In addition, they may cover the cut with petroleum jelly to keep further damage from happening. If the fighter has a nosebleed, the cutman will put cotton swabs with adrenaline hydrochloride up the fighter’s nostrils to help stop the bleeding.

It’s amazing how quickly these men can get the bleeding to stop… sometimes with wounds that would send the rest of us to the emergency rooj!
