Why I Don't Want to Watch Female MMA Fighters

Hey, I’ll admit it. I don’t like watching women fight in MMA. Now, that doesn’t mean that I think women shouldn’t be able to fight. It just means that I don’t want to watch it. I’m all for equal rights for women; what woman wouldn’t be? Equal pay for equal work, the right to vote, the right to decide what I want to do with my body, bring it on! The right to kick the crap out of another woman in front of thousands of leering fans? Not so much.

Does the fight for equality mean that woman should do everything that men do? I don’t think so. I believe that we can have equality between the sexes while maintaining the qualities that make us different. It goes both ways with me too. Nothing makes me crazier than seeing some d-bag guy with eyeliner and mascara on. Come on buddy, really? Hey dude, do you really need to carry that purse? And no, calling it a "murse" or a "men’s carry all" does not make it better. What could you possibly have to have on you at all times that would require you to carry a purse? Wallet, keys and phone. Done. On the opposite side, I don’t think that women should feel that equality means they need to take on the qualities that make men men. Call me old fashioned, but I believe that women are nurturers. In the grand scheme of things, it would usually take a lot to bring a woman to violence. So to see two women go at each other with everything they’ve got just feels wrong to me.

Another thing that bothers me is the people who enjoy watching these fights. It seems to me that there aren’t a ton of people who watched the Carano-Santos fight because they wanted to see the athleticism and skill of these women. Most of the men who watched got off on the novelty of seeing two chicks beat up on each other. Watching video commentaries and reading the message boards and hearing people comment on "bitches beating each other up" and "I was hoping they’d start making out" convinced me of that. Who knows, people may be more willing to see these women as the athletes they are in the future, but I still don't think I'll be into it. I’d rather spend my equal pay on a pair of fabulous new shoes or purse, then on gym fees and gloves.

I watch it because I LOVE watching MMA. Don’t care about the gender.

Although I do think their athleticism is awesome, and I would love to have a body like that (more Gina, less Cyborg). I do think women should have every opportunity to do what men are allowed to do. That includes peeing standing up (I’m looking at you, Shenis [http://www.shenis.com/]) At least they aren’t girl fighting—pulling hair and scratching each other).

However, I have no doubt there are plenty of guys rubbing one (or several) out to the pics of Gina weighing in.

It’s so funny you say that. On Monday at work this guy forwarded me the video of her weigh-in, and he was just speechless.
